11.15x58Rmm Spanish & 11x60Rmm Mauser

Colleagues: have not shot the above calibre rifles in far too many years. Last time I fired them, I loaded Black powder, but now would like to try a smokeless load.

Does anyone have a smokeless load for either of these calibres? Have a good supply of IMR3031 and SR4759.

"Range Rumor" is to use Trapdoor .45-70 loads for both powders and calibres. But I 'dunno.'

10-12 grains Unique with a tuft of dacron (say a 1/2" square?) to hold the powder on the primer.  SR4759 trapdoor loads work fine.  20-23 grains, again with a dacron tuft (380-400 gr cast bullets). (from Lyman 3rd edition Cast Bullet Handbook).  Peabodys and rolling blocks are stronger actions, and could handle 10% more, but your accuracy will not be any better than with the lighter loads.  Honestly, I have buddies that shoot Unique and cast bullets in large capacity BPCR's all the time, and they swear by it.

3031 burns poorly unless pushing it to the limits of safe pressure in these guns.  Lots of unburnt powder in the bore with light loads.

Double base pistol/shotgun powders seem to shoot well in large volume cartridges.
I think I would try loads with out the dacron or other filler before I put anything in
there that doesn't burn. AFIK dacron and other polymers just melt.
In a big case with just a little powder the primer should cause lots of turbulence and
provide good ignition. A day at the range should tell you all you need to know.
YMMV

Again just thinking out loud. Wink

I used 3031 in a 45-70 for hunting loads and had to go to magnum primers to avoid
hangfires. Rifle was a Ruger #1.

John Boy: thanks for the post about loading with Trail Boss. I load it in .45 Colt and .38-40 WCF, but 'nevva' gave it a thought about loading it  for anything else. Again, thanks.

As I recall Lee's Second Edition has BOTH cartridges.

I pulled my book up:

Mauser in Lees Guide shows only both varieties of 4198 (IMR/H)

43 Spanish with full weight bullets (385gr), Varget, H4198, REL 7
Below 385Gr, XMR2495, 4350, 5744, 4198, H4895

If you need specific data for a powder, glad to relay the loads form the book.

Mike: I borrowed a Fellow Shooter's  copy of Richard Lee's "Modern Reloading", 2 edition (2013 printing date), but I did not find the 43 Spanish/11.15x 58Rmm or 43 Mauser/11x60Rmm listed in the index.

Would you check what edition and printing date of Lee's book you have? If different than the one I borrowed, I would like to find a copy. Thanks.
