help identify vernier sight

The base is remington spacing.  Has the letters RJW on one end under base and 188 on the underside opposite end.  Is this a modern repo or an orginal?

All the original thick-base sights I've seen have a different kind of knurling (crosshatching) on the pivot screw head; nor have I seen that kind of anti-reflection surface on an original eyecup.  For those reasons, my guess is repro.

Base seems to have more of a Ballard shape than a Remington shape. I think repro too.

Don't know difference between Rem & Marlin thick-bases, but Marlin & Winchester are EXACTLY the same, except for length, leading me to assume both were manufactured by a third party supplier.  BGI, perhaps?

I believe regardless of maker on the gun, a lot of sights were made by BGI. The Remingtons I own with original tang sights have a wider bevel on the edge than my Ballard tang sights have.

in the last picture of the underside of the base there appears to be something stamped in front of the spring housing. Possibly a makers name. Worth a look see.

His original post said it's stamped, "RJW" in the front. Unsure what RJW would stand for myself?

Probably the maker's initials, but it's further evidence that the sight is not original.  Looks like a well-made sight, except that the maker tried to make his eyecup better than the originals!

looks like it was hand stamped with individual hand held letter stamps.   Combined with everything else, I'd guess that it was a nicely made one-off by a talented craftsman with the machine tools to do the job but not with professional stamping tools.   JMHO of course
