11.7x56R Shooter, I'd Like to "Pick Your Brains"

New Friends,

I just 3 days ago bought a Danish M-1867 that was re-bored to 11.7x56R from the previous 11.7x51R. - It has a GREAT bore but "beat-up looking" wood.
(I suspect that Bannerman's or some other "importer" may have run a .45-70 Government reamer through the original chamber BUT until I get the Cerrosafe that I've ordered, I cannot say for sure.)

I plan to go to Moldova & The Ukraine (and possibly to another Eastern European nation)  this Fall/Winter to hunt wild boar, wolves & Red Deer, so I'm looking for advice on a GOOD STOPPER for Big Game Hunting with the 1878- built Danish RB 3-band musket.
(NON-citizens are generally prohibited from using modern weapons for hunting game where I'm headed. - Reproductions are also banned. = PRE-1890 firearms whether muzzleloading or cartridge are OK, provided that they are > 10MM bore & loaded with Black Powder.)

yours, satx

I use 65grs of 3F compressed, .030 over powder wad and a 405gr pure lead bullet. With a well placed shot, it will do what you want.

I use about 2% tin in my pure lead bullets including round balls for ML.  They pour better.

craigster,

What case are you using to form the 11.7x56R brass??
(I have too much Scots blood in my veins to happily pay 2.50-3.50 for each round & would prefer to roll my own.)

45-70 is what I use. No special technique, just load and shoot and you've got a fire formed case. There will probably be a very slight bulge from the base forward maybe 5/8" or so. Has not been an issue.

craigster,

SOME of the "re-formatted" 11.7x56 chambers are so large that numerous people have said that their .45-70 cases rupture after just one firing.
(Sounds like you have a fairly tight chamber.)

THANKS, satx

Could very well be, a chamber cast would tell the tale. Donnelly's conversion book details making them from 43 Spanish. But I would guess that they aren't giving 43 brass away these days.

craigster,

Fwiw, I saw .43 Spanish empty cases offered for sale by a vender form Houston at the last big San Antonio Gun Show for  65.oo per 100. = I noticed it because I was looking for another "obsolete caliber" cases & "sorted through" his goodly pile of plastic bags.
(Of course, I didn't have a rifle that I needed those cases for then. - WORSE LUCK.)

For wild boar or any other large animals - use a lead bullet. 20/1 lead to tin is good. STuff the case full with good black powder - the Swiss stuff is OK, avoid Pyrodex.

The hogs won't have a chance!

BACO has the Danish brass for $2.06 a pop. Really not all that bad.

jon_norstog,

I suspect that you are 100% correct, inasmuch as the "market hunters" of the Scandinavian countries use the 12mm Swedish & the 11.7mm  Danish rounds for killing moose & for taking polar bears for pelts.
Both rounds are said to be perfectly capable of taking the moose/bears without destroying either the meat or pelt.

Further a bull moose is both MUCH larger than a boar but also  about equally tough as a boar/bear.

Btw, I'm considering a mold that throws two HB 405 grain bullets in about  "SWC configuration" & loaded at about 1350FPS for my hunting ammo. - That should do the job acceptably, I would think.

Yes on the 45-70 brass. Right on the Lee HB bullet. I don't use wads with the HB bullet. I remember these rifles being sold by somebody like Golden State Arms. They were sold as 45-70's. This would have been in the 1960's. Smiley

J. G. Terry,

I have no idea who originally sold this one in the USA as the >55YO previous owner said that it belonged to his uncle, who passed away  in the mid-1950s.
(He said that the musket sat in a corner of the family home's garage for over 50 years unused & essentially forgotten, as there was never any ammo for it. - In fact, he said that he was surprised that somebody didn't throw it away as it was "worthless" as a hunting rifle.)

I'm really glad that it wasn't thrown away as it is mechanically fine with a great-looking/rust-free bore but rather "beat-up looking" wood.

Inasmuch as all of the known M-1867-96 RB have been re-chambered to centerfire/rebuilt/"modernized"/refinished at least 2-3 times by the Danish arsenals over the 140 years, I probably will try to "steam out" the worst of the dents & refinish the wood.

yours, satx

I didn't mean to sound as if I contradicted your comments. I remember the ads in AR. For some extra you could get a yatagan bayonet. Most of these rifles that I have seen have seen some use but have excellent bores. The Lee Hollow base bullet works well. My wood was oil soaked to some degree and responded well to a cleaning. For this I use the cleaners used by the antique furniture people. Good Shooting.
