Last autumn I purchased this Haenel/Aydt rifle which was advertised as being in 8.15 X 46R....which would have been fine as I already cast and load for that cartridge.  Howsomever....a chamber cast revealed the case is a straight taper and the bore slugged to .345.  Something of a red headed step child.  No one I'm familiar with on 3 continents can identify the cartridge.  Forming cases was easy, simply fireform 30 WCF brass and trim to length.  The bullet was another matter.  I made a sizing die and took some 208 gr., .358 bullets down to .347 but they were too heavy and long for the twist so I ended up ordering a mold from Accurate Molds.  I had to figure out how to size the case necks once formed as my dies haven't arrived from CH-4D.  It was a convoluted process but I came up with a way.

I had tried a few loads and none were really impressive....and barely satisfactory.  A couple days ago I decided to try IMR-4227 and I'm glad I did.  18 grs. of IMR-4227 was loaded into the case, the Accurate bullet at .347, 175 grs. and cast of 50/50, lead/lino lubed with Lee Alox was seated to the middle of the front driving band.  Target posted and I retired to my bench.  I had also increased a RE-7 charge to 21 grs. wondering if a 1/2 grain increase would improve previous groups....nope, didn't happen.  Then to the 4227 load.  First shot from a cold barrel was out of the group.  However, the next 4 clustered in 0.344 in.  Target below.  Four of the Re-7 loads are marked with a "7" above them.  The 5th is the shot mostly centered in the 10 ring.  The first shot with 4227 is on the line between the 8 & 9 ring.

I got similar results with a stop ring bullet and 12 gr of 4227 in my 8.15x46.  18 gr.  seems a little stiff; did you chrono that load?

I did, average velocity was 1524 fps.  Quickloads gave 20 grs. as a max.  The volume of that case is probably 20% more than the 8.15 X 46R and the throat is quite large.  In addition I am shooting the same weight bullet as is generally fired in 8.15  Pressure signs and case head expansion are fine.  In mine, the 8.15, I use 12 grs. of SR-4759.  Perhaps I need to try IMR-4227 also.
