7mm/28 Cal Mold ID

I got this mold on Ebay, a couple of weeks ago. It's made from re-cut Lyman blocks, marked 245496 so, it's not one of the ODG's molds.

I've seen a few different molds that were made like this one with the extra set of guild holes but, I don't remember seeing any with brass inserts.

The brass inserts are 1/4 x 3/8 and pressed into the blocks, full length. It's a more modern, spitzer type design, with a .285 x .195 long base band and the driving bands are .065 wide, with .035 wide grooves. The start of the ogive and all the rest of the bands are .283.

Has anyone seen blocks like this or seen a bullet design like it?

Frank Barry Darr has made a few moulds just like yours, I had one just like it for a 6 Dia. Ogive 216gr. Spitzer for my 32-40. Barry also made a mould with interchangeable brass inserts for sale when still making moulds under Borton and Darr. They were real jewels and I have only seen one Barrys with inserts for 25,28,32&40 cal spitzers. This could possibly an early one back when he was building 28-30/30 Schuetzen rifles as he used to re-cut lyman moulds as well as others. They cast beautiful bullets and you have a real unique Jewel of a bullet mould. My 32 mould had two set screws possibly 4-40 holding the blocks in position on the outside of each mould half and the inserts were identical looking in regards to size in relationship with a 32 bullet. There was an article in the Journal written Barry in regards to my mould " The Sonny Mould" or something to that effect several years back. Also the interchangeable mould had dovetailed brass inserts with a unique design feature for removing and relacing them that I am not willing to share without having prior permission that may also be protected. If you can locate an original copy of the Borton Darr mould list they were listed on the the bottom of the page including pictures, I lost mine in a computer crash or I would have shared it. Rich Davis has my insert mould and I believe it is on loan to Jerry Cleave and maybe they could also provide a picture of it here for everyones review.

I hope this is helpful.

Thanks, JLouis.

Does anyone reconized the box that it came in. I have no way of knowing if it was original to the mold.

You are welcome Frank, the box is not familar nor is the hand writing. Was the seller able to provide any information or did it come out of an estate and if so do you happen to know who's.

I do have the Borton/Darr Catalog and it does appear to be one of Barry's designs:

No. 19   285-143              1.025          5GG  Cylindrical Spitzer

In my catalog, there are pictures of the brass insert molds but, this must be a early one as the picture shows a plate on the bottom and no guild holes. Mine also has a G6 stamped in the lower left corner of the block w/o the sprue plate.

Thanks again,

Frank
