Lead shot ?

So, I've got about 175 lbs of # 7-1/2 lead shot left over from my Trap shooting days. I'm thinking its probably pure lead ?
Does anyone really know ?
If so, does it need Tin added to make it a bit harder ?
Also, its about 15 years old, oxidized -- any issues with that ?

Chances are good that it's got a lot of antimony in it, and is already very hard.

Probably arsenic, too.  They used that when dropping shot from towers to increase surface tension, making for rounder shot.

It seems to me that lead shot is 2% antimony. You might get away using it for your application, by mixing 50/50 with pure lead and then adding 2% tin to it.

Make a small batch and see how it shoots. I shot ww + 2% tin in my 45/70 for a few years, BSed with excellent groups (.60 - .84) @ 100.

I threw some lead shot in my pot of 40-1 one day. Had to throw all the lead out. Could not cast a bullet with it. Had to wire wheel the pot clean.

Joe,
That might have been because it was coated with graphite or some other thing like moly.

If so, it's it may not be a good idea to use the shot if it's new.

It's not so much the loosing the lead, as how frustrated you get try to cast with, before you figure out it has zinc in it. And then, you have to throw it away and clean the pot!

My zinc experience was when I was trying to cast bullets for the BP LR MATCH at Ottawa in 93.  I almost panicked  Grin Cheesy

Sell it to a Pistol shooter who casts there own bullets they tend to like it and then buy some pure lead and tin. I played with various alloy recipes for about a year that contained varying amounts of antimony and it just didn't pan out for serious benchrest shooting. Ended up with a couple of 5 gal. buckets left over when all was said and done and a pistol shooter nabbed it all with great joy.

Thanks guys, now I'm glad I asked -- probably just blow it off shooting some Trap -- or other less risky ventures. Just bought a brand new bottom pour lead pot -- I'd hate to contaminate it first go-around. Shocked

I tried to melt some small shot one time that was a little corroded.  The corrosion made a shell around the melted lead, and it wouldn't even coalesce into liquid until I mashed each pellet.   Then had 1/2 lead and 1/2 dross.    Unfortunate, as there were many 100's of #'s of the stuff available.
