Another date request - Stevens 44

Sorry for the redundancy, but no references found.

I have a Stevens 44 serial number 163xx in 22 LR with a 24" #2 barrel half round half octagon and "hooked" steel butt plate all matching serial numbers.  It has a Lyman tang sight and shows good color case hardening under the sight.

Any idea when it was made?

Does it have a 6 or 7 o'clock extractor?

I don't know the exact date but, the 7 o'clock extractor, ended sometime after 1900.

Some others will be able to give a better date.

Look to see if you have screw heads on the right side.

Serial number puts in a relatively narrow range that had the side extractor, but also had the two-piece "bolt" pivots for lever and breechblock.  So it has to come just before the introduction of the 6 o'clock extractor.

If so, I'd put it somewhere between 1900 and 1903.  The latter is the first dated catalog I have that refers to the central extractor and the "bolts", and 1900 is the last that I have which doesn't.

Wish I had a full-line 1901 or 1902 catalog.  Abby at Cornell has an "abridged" 1902, which I suppose I should buy......

uscra112, thank you for the information.

The action is on its way to CPA for "refreshing" and color case hardening.  As far as screw heads, the action has been taken apart in the past so I have now way of knowing what the original direction the screws were in.  But they are two piece screws, on screwing into the center of the other.

If you look on the "bolts", you'll find a little projection, just under the rim, that goes into a notch in the action. It aliens the bolt and keeps it from turning, when you tighten the opposing screw.

Without pulling one out to check, I think the "nut" part goes on the right and the "bolt" goes on the left. Someone correct me if I am wrong. As stated you should see the notch on the frame. A lot of these get damaged by people who don't know how it works.

The short screw goes in the right hand side of the action, the shouldered pin the left hand side. Right and left being with the rifle at the shooter's shoulder.
