Written on the lower right corner of the photo is
S.S. T.V.G.
Shell Mound Park . . . 1915
The resolution is too low for me to read more.
The front row of shooters appear to be holding a combination of three High Walls, a Ballard, plus a Martini.
Really nice old photo.

There are indeed two Americas. Simply put, it is not the haves and have nots. The two Americans are in reality divided into those who do and those who don't.

It looks like the cursive says San Francisco International Shooting Festival Aug 8th to Sept 26th illegible but probably 1915 looks to be the start of the numeral 1

Shell Mound Park was on the Oakland side of the SF Bay.  I think in Emeryville.  I was able to trace the ownership of a rifle (Hepburn?) to one of those guys.  If you find names, I would be interested in sharing.

Can you imagine the furor today?

WOW! what a great picture. But I do notice one issue. Only one or possibly two shown might? be under 25 years old. A mature group of enthusiasts. Looks to me that this game has always been one for the well to do that has the time and the $$
to invest and participate. This is something that we today are concerned about. Lack of participation by younger family groups. Still a great picture though. Regards, FITZ. Smiley

I think the guy holding the Martini is William F. Blasse, of the Golden Gate Rifle Club. This clipping is from the San Francisco Chronicle, September 23rd, 1915. This rifle match was part of the Panama-Pacific International Exhibition of 1915. The man sitting next to him, holding a Stevens rifle, is Christian Krempel who was the president of Wieland Brewery in Los Angeles. His wife Anna Bauermann Krempel, standing on the right holding a Winchester, was a well known Los Angeles shooter.

It was definitely a sport reserved for the upper crust.  The average family's net worth at the turn of the 20th century was only a few thousand dollars adjusted for inflation in today's money.  My wife does extensive genealogical research.  Reading wills to establish family connections is a big part of that.   Many of the wills she has had me read are really quite pathetic by our standards today.  They bequeath items we would consider rummage sale donations today.

Going back further into the pre-Rev wills, they list items such as a plate, a knife,  a fork, a spoon, a Bible, a book, 1.5 bushels of corn ..........

Is it me or do all but one of those HW receiver rings look longer than the Winchester HW's? They look more like the Clerke HW's than Winchester.

Could Bo have copied those rifles?

BTW, that's a awesome picture Smiley

William Gibbs Jr had passed away (from unspecified causes) by the time this photo was taken, but I'll bet all the people in this photo knew him.

The rifle was a roller, not a Hepburn.

By Marie Silva, Archivist & Manuscripts Librarian, California Historical Society

On June 11th, 1915, The Hebrew announced that “the greatest shooting festival ever held in America” would be celebrated at Shell Mound Park in Emeryville in August and September in connection with the Panama-Pacific International Exposition. According to Arms and the Man, men and women from around the world evinced a “lively interest” in the upcoming Grand Prize Shooting Tournament, in part due to “the war in Europe, the revolution in Mexico and other disturbances between warring nations which emphasize the vital importance of superior marksmanship” (June 10, 1915).

The Hebrew and other San Francisco Bay Area newspapers continued to cover the festival with great excitement, leading up to and following its opening day on August 8, 1915. On the second day of the tournament, the prize was taken by “the lady champion rifle shot of California” (San Francisco Chronicle, August 10, 1915), Mrs. Captain Chris (or Christian) Krempel, who scored a bulls-eye in her first shot. The Oakland Tribune captured PPIE’s own Annie Oakley on camera, declaring this marvel of sharpshooting a “modern Diana” (August 15, 1915). A native of Los Angeles, Mrs. Krempel held the Middle West championship title for rifle shooting; a regular 32-40 Winchester rifle was her weapon of choice.  Smiley

I wonder if that is Anna Krempel on the right with the rifle?
