38-50RH: What primers are you using

Print Post
Greetings.

I’m reloading 38-50RH and have a primer question.    I’m running low on the CCI 500 Small Rifle Primers I started out with.   I can’t find any CCI 500 around here now that I'm in need.   I’m curious what others are using?    Also, if you find it helpful to put some paper between primer and BP?

I'm assuming the parent case is 30-40 Krag , I've never seen one that would take anything but large rifle primers.

Unless the OP has special 38-50 cases with SR primer pockets (which he may have - it is a Cody-Ballard and think John told me it included cases when purchased) he is also shooting LR. I'm using CCI200, BR2 & Rem 9 1/2 in mine. Haven't really done a primer test to see which is best. For 200yd/chickens/pigs I use the CCI200 & Rem 9 1/2. For Schuetzen, turkeys and longer distances I use BR2.

Tried some 'primer' newspaper wads and saw no positive effect. Plan to try some coffee filter paper next to see if it makes a difference. My rifle shoots ~1moa when I do my part, so no hurry.

Based on your results on the ram-line a couple of weeks ago, think you should find more of  what you've got.

John,

I just checked Midway and they show CCI 400s available.  Might jump on those.

$33/thousand $148/5 thousand ready to ship. Don't remember if they charge a Hazmat on primers.

I use Federal LP Match primers with a tracing paper overprimer wad, 51 grains of Swiss 1 1/2, .060 poly wad, and a 360 grain Paul Jones micro groove. You might try small pistol primers since they are the same physical dimensions as the small rifle. In my testing the less primer the better. Whoops, I see that the CCI 500s are SP;-) OK, how about Federal SP Match?

Thanks fellahs,

Right you are Glenn.   RMC - have about 95 pcs and will be watching for more.  I have 5pcs of 30-40 but they are about .025 short so have not been using them.   I asked on another forum what guys were getting in length out of their reformed 30-40s and the ones who responded said they were having to trim, but they had a shorter chamber than mine.

Guess I'll cast a wider net in search of some CCI 500s in case some experimentation doesn't work out.

I have a brick of R9&1/2.   Very first loads I did were with Magnum, albeit CCI.   I will give those a shot with some different loads too.

JY... got a line on some CCI 400 locally.   Just have to drive 35 miles for them - I need some MTM boxes anyway and they only charge $2.50 a box out there.

Appreciate the input!

John - Now I know why you are only getting 42gr of powder in there. If you want more of the RMC brass with the small primer pocket you will likely have to order from RMC. They are a custom maker and their brass comes on the used market infrequently. However, from what we've been hearing, 30-40 brass is getting pretty rare, as well, with Winchester dropping it from their line.

How long is your chamber? My 30-50 brass was ~2.260 after expanding to 38-50.

Glenn,  Almost embarrassed to admit this since normally the first thing I do is a chamber cast but I can’t say for certain about chamber length -  2.250 is close.   All the original owner’s brass was within a couple thousands and his dummy rounds were built to that length.    Being what it was and coming to me with what all it did, I just pressed forward.

His notes on one plastic sleeve indicated 48gr of 1 ½ Swiss.    I had that one wrong when we talked – by a long shot.    Also appears he may have been seated out considerable.   Nothing applies since I’m shooting OE.

I did pick up a brick of small rifle and a sleeve of magnum for testing.   If it likes the magnum I can go pick up a brick of those and use the other for my 32-20.

I have a hard time reconciling the notion that you need magnum flash to ignite better -- but then you need to dampen ignition.   I understand the notion that you don’t want the bullet moving before full ignition but still seems a little contradictory; go hotter, but tamp it down!    I’ll just try it and see what it likes within a few grains of where I’m at now.

The compression scale is a lengthy little bugger to test along too.    Looks like I could test all the way from zero to somewhere around 3/8”.  I've shot all the way up to 50gr which got me to that full range but dropped down to .035 compressing (42gr) since that was my most accurate.    I need to do a lot of the proving after this season.    I did put notebook paper over the very first BP loads I shot but at the time thought I was just keeping powder out of the flash hole.    Lots to learn and experiment with here.

I’m gonna try and be ready with both the 38-50 and the 40-63 for the next Sunday’s shoot.  Btw… got a globe and Soule for that 40-63 Bill was shooting.    I hope to take that one to the Quigley so I should probably jump over to that one.    I’d like to know how that bullet flies with improved sights before then.   Probably will not have another mold by then.   Need to stay under a 370gr bullet with the twist in that rifle.

Best Regards,
John
