Winchester 1885 with Pope barrel

Hi,
I'm new to your bulletin board. I've been reading it quite a while.
I've always been interested in the schuetzen type of shooting.
I recently obtained a Win. 1885 with a Pope barrel and thought it's time to quit sitting on the fence.
It's a high wall with a Pope 32-40 barrel. It looks pretty good but not perfect by any means. Fooled around with it a bit yesterday an I was impressed with how well it shot with just the junk I had laying around.
Ton of questions. To get the most of the old girl I think I'm going to need a breech seater, and a tapered bullet mould.
Think I need a longer heavier bullet
I'm probably a contender for the world's worst bullet caster.
Does anyone sell tapered bullets? Good place for a mould?
I saw a couple on CPA Rifle's website.
I plan on shooting black powder but am certainly open to suggestions.
All input greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Scott

Hi Scott, Welcome to the forum.

1) We would love to see some pics.

2) If you give the guys here some more specifics on the rifle then I am sure they would be able to start you off in the right direction.  I'm talking twist rate, bore diameter, intended type of shooting, etc...

Thanks for the reply.
Not sure of the twist, obviously a gain twist.
Has some Pope heiroglyphics under the forearm.
21   1.41    362
I'm guessing a start of 1 in 21 and finishing at 1 in 14...just guessing
Bore is .322/.323
I'd like to try breech seating and black powder.
All new to me

Bad caster , well shoot, you don't need the rifle then, just send it along to me I'll make sure it gets good bullets 😇. What would shipping to 99337 cost?

Just jokin, sounds like something every single person here would be very interested in seeing pictures of 😃

I'll even post me for ya if ya send me to my e-mail slwlude@yahoo.com
And congrats on your find, and welcome to the forum, you're a lucky person Smiley

Hi Scott - there is a group buy going on right now for tapered bullet moulds, either brass or aluminum for a very good price in your choice of three different sizes.  The weight is about 185 grains +/-.  See the thread about 4 or five down from yours.  Frankeore is the contact.  Welcome to the forum!

Regards, Joe

Just to bring up a fine point: Due to the flat bottomed rifling Pope barrels need to be measured across the points(not the middle of the grooves) I think you'll find the max. groove diameter to be .327 or so. You will need a bullet at least that diameter.

Ron Smith and I figured out that the twist starts at 21 and the ratio is 1.41.  Mine is .33 and marked the same, but it starts at 27.  362 is your barrel number.

Thanks everyone for the replies
I will carefully re-measure the 2 bullets I slugged the bore with and then see about getting in the the mould group buy.
I will try and put on a picture or two later.....patience...not a great computer guy either

Thanks
Scott

There is also an explanation of the Pope barrel numbers in the LaBounty Rifling book. Congrats on the new rifle.

Do you have a brief summary of how to use Pope's ratio to determine the final twist?
