Bonner, Probably 1903-1904. Looks like a nice gun, how about a full length photo.      ...MIKE...

Yah, I'd say 1904, too.   Nobody can know for certain because the factory records were all destroyed after WW1.

The 45 means that it was a Model Number 45 using a 44 1/2 action.  Number 45 was the first step above the Number 44, the bare bones rifle.  The EX meant that is was a special order rifle with something extra.  Nobody knows about the O or 0, but almost all the Stevens Ideal or 44 1/2 rifles seem to have such a mark.  #1 on the barrel is barrel weight, with 1 being the lightest.

I think it is later than 1904, but not much later.  Maybe 1906.

Thanks for the info gentlemen, the ex was the main thing I was looking for, this has helped me to understand  why this rifle is built the way it is. Mad mike here are the photos. Thanks again. Bonner

Full octagon barrels are pretty rare on old Stevens single shots! That's a great looking gun!

That's not the buttstock or butt plate that would be on a 45 Stevens, evidently it's been restocked.   Ledball

Good catch, leadball.
Looks like maybe a buttstock and plate for a Model 51.

Another higher-grade part not normally seen on a Model 45 is your lever.  And while its presence could be part of the "EX" marking, the lever insert, if ordered, would normally be of wood, not the bone or ivory yours appears to be.  In short, I'm agreeing that some non-factory customization is also evident.

Bill, My thought also, I really liked the wood, lever, and the bone insert.  the barrel also got my attention, had never seen a full octagon barrel on a 45 model. probably paid the premium for it, But I didn't have to wait a year or so to have it made and I know no computer was used to build this one . That barrel is almost certainly part of the EX order, but it is far heavier than any #1 that I have encountered.

The other parts may also have been part of the EX order.

How about the scope blocks?  The original blocks on the only fancy 44 1/2 that I have used had a longer rear block, but were the same basic dimensions as our standard blocks today.

Waterman, You are right about the barrel weight, the 1902 # 50 catalog says the 28" length barrel should weight 4 #, This # 1 weight in at Seven #'s . the rear scope mount from front to back is 1.234, the front is 0.894 front to back. Bonner

I think this rifle is a excellently done custom  job.

The butt plate is a #4, a 45 would have had a #3 as the upgraded butt stock, the #2 was standard and I think the screws are closer together than a factory rifle. The comb also looks a little thick.

Bonner, could we get pictures of the barrel markings? I seem to remember, that if a rifle came factory, with scope blocks, it had the Stevens markings on the adjacent flat, to the top one.

If the blocks have anything but a divot on them, they would be later. The lyman/Unertl have a crescent cut, sometimes with the divot (Winchester style) on the opposing side.

All marking will be of value in trying to idenafy it.
