Interest in contributing, book on Steven's Rifles?

Ok, so here is my idea.

Apparently there is no single authoritative book on Steven's Rifles. It was suggested on this forum, that maybe I should write such a book. I propose to undertake the writing of this book. Who on this forum would be interested in contributing their knowledge, pictures and time for the creation of this book? I would propose that the book royalties be owned by the ASSRA. I have some experience as a writer: been published a few times for articles, have a chapter in a technical book and an earned doctorate of education.

My vision would be for the development of a editorial board to help "guide" the content of the book. I would also seek articles, from the membership as well as pictures of example rifles. I would serve as the point of contact, main writer and editor.

What are your thoughts?

My first thought would be to try and get Paul Shuttleworth involved. Paul is a very knowledgeable collector / shooter. Also Consult with Tom Rowe.

I would think the ASSRA Archives has much printed material for research.  Ask the archivest.

I agree that the Archives can be most helpful, however looking for those people who can bridge the gap between what is printed and what knowledge has been gained through a lifetime of shooting, gunsmithing, collecting and admiring these old Single Shots.

The greatest collection of Stevens rifles, pistols, pocket rifles, accessories, and ephemera that I've ever seen is owned by a collector/dealer J. B. Barnes, of Kentucky.  Or maybe I should say "was owned", as given my own age, it's likely that Mr. Barnes has died.  But maybe not, as I don't remember hearing of his collection being dispersed.  In any case, he always impressed me as someone who would gladly make available what me knows and has to a Stevens book effort.  Perhaps some ASSRA members know him?

Both the Davis Firearms Museum in Claremore, OK and the Cody Firearms Museum have excellent collections of Stevens firearms. Especially Schuetzen rifles. Think the Davis Museum may have the edge in both quantity & quality, but both are excellent collections.

Kentucky is much closer to me and if anyone knows contact information I would be happy to try and reach him.

Again looking for contributors from here this forum, outside info will be pursued as well, but really want to capitalize on the knowledge contained in this forum membership.

A good updated Stevens book has been lacking for quite some time. Suspect a number of people here may be willing to contribute what knowledge they have gained.

Understanding that no book is ever truly complete, in order to provide input, would you put drafts of the various sections of the book on a website for viewing, with an area for comments to fill in gaps in the info or discuss possible discrepancies/variations?

And do you think you sould include a section on the various Stevens rifle scopes and mounts?      Wink

Paul Shuttleworth is a walking archive of Stevens info as is Gary Quinlan. I expect that they would gladly contribute of their vast knowledge to the project.

BP that is why I tossed the idea out there, so that we could gain an idea of what should be included.

Keep the ideas flowing everyone

I would be willing to contribute what I can. I have probably more info on the Stevens Bisley Model than most. It has been posted here in the past and I kept copies of everything I have. Glad to contribute anything that will be of help.

If I'm not mistaken, John Dutcher started a book on Stevens rifles years ago. I know he had a few articles published in, I believe, Arms & the Man magazine. You might want to get in touch with him, he might have a manuscript waiting to be published. I believe he is still a member of the ASSRA, so he shouldant be hard to reach.      Good luck & count on me for any help you might need.   ...MIKE...

If you can get hold of Ductcher tell him to make another run of this Ballard book. I need one and they are selling for several hundreds of $$ these days. Had to borrow my brother's.
