Help With Unertl Bases
Feb 6th, 2016 at 2:33pm
Print Post
I need a little help. I have a nice old Winchester Low Wall that really shoots at 50 yards with the iron sights using Norma Match 22 ammo. The rifle came oddly drilled and taped for Unertl bases. The problem is the front base holes are around .725 center to center. The rear seem standard at .860. My question is who makes bases for these size spacing's for the 3/8" width octagon barrel?  I would love to put one of my Lyman Jr. scopes on and really see how it shoots!!

Thanks!!

The Low Wall likes the Norma Match 22 (this five shot group fired with the iron sights and my old eyes!!) and really ejects the fired cases nicely which I like!

Thanks!

Steve Earle may have what you need, and if not can custom make them.

I may have what you need. I have to check my supply.

If so, it would be $18 shipped.

High Noon, that spacing looks very much like the spacing for a
30" Stevens Scope. You need to overlay your scope and see if it is long enough. It does in the picture look kind of long. You said it was a Unertle, Looks long.  Well just an observation. Regards, FITZ. Smiley

Frank,

I would need the screws too. The tap that works is a 5-44 maybe I could drill and retap if the screws you have are larger or order a few of each from Mr. Earle to match.

Thanks!

Fitz,

The scope I have is a Lyman Jr. and it will work on the block spaces.

Thanks!

Not sure it takes a 30" to span that spacing and still have proper eye relief, but it will take a 26" or so scope. I have an old Ballard that I've owned for many years, and tried mounting various 22"-23" scopes to the barrel. Always had to climb the stock to try and get proper eye relief. Then last fall I came across a 26" Stevens scope and grabbed it quickly, as I was guessing it must be close to what the Ballard was D&T for. Had a friend make me up two bases to fit the hole spacing, and mounted the Stevens scope up! It's the perfect length for this spacing, and really comfortable shooting position now!

marlinguy, the reason I said it looked long, a few years ago I came into a M1885 Winchester Schuetzen in 32-40 Takedown with 3 flats Matted Barrel cope block holes seemed way long distance apart. Showed it to a friend that has seen more Schuetzen Rifles than I and he quickly said "You Need to Find
a Stevens 30" Scope" I did finally find one and it fit and the eye relief was right on for use. Well all for now. Regards, FITZ. Smiley

Fitz, I've owned the Ballard above for quite a long time, and always wanted to find a scope that had enough length to fit the very long spacing! I tried numerous shorter scopes, and although they were long enough to fit, they sat too far forward to be correct.
A friend had this Stevens scope he was selling, and I immediately grabbed it, as I thought it would work for the base spacing on my Ballard. Sure enough, the 26" tube had plenty of length. If I had put a longer tube on it, I'd have had to drill and tap the alignment screw back farther, as Stevens scopes use a V in the front ring to align the crosshairs, and stop the scope travel.
