12L14 Barrel Steel

As I do not want to hijack another thread that brought up a concern for me:

Please enlighten me on the use of 12L14 for barrels. It is my understanding that many of the "good" barrel makers in the 1980's (Coors Schuetzenfest era) used this steel for their barrels. I do know Green Mountain used it for their early cartridge barrels. I personally have one 40 cal Winchester Hi Wall barrel by Barry Darr (?) and one 45 cal Green Mountain (This one is stamped 12L14 on the breech end and "For Black Powder Only" on the top) on a Sharps, and I am concerned. Being all I use is black (no smokeless) in them, is it understood they should be safe or should I scrap them on the side of caution? What about all the others one does not know about floating around?

L means the material is "free machining"  or containing lead in very small amounts.

12L14 bar is a standard resulfurized and rephosphorized grade carbon Steel, and a free machining steel.  The added lead to the chemical composition provides improved machinability. Although the machinability is very good, the added lead content reduces the overall strength of this alloy.

Typical applications include high-speed screw machine products, spindles, bushings, hose fittings and many other items where excellent machining characteristics can be fully utilized.

brinell hardness is around,  163

In a .22 rimfire with an schuetzen weight barrel I wouldn’t worry about a barrel made from screw machine steel. Centerfires are a different story the danger escalates with larger calibers. The harder the pounding the more likely it will cause fractures in the sulfurized steel. The dangers go up as the temperature drops as the sulfur becomes brittle at lower temperatures.

Mine don't. Have a 40-65 with a bazillion duplex rounds through it with no problems at all. Huh?

Then there was the time in Kentucky, this old timer was telling me how much his daughter could drink before she started threatening the other women at a party while I was muzzle loading my .38 Hepburn. I loaded two 300 grain bullets, loaded a shell and fired. Duplex load, both bullets hit the target and the barrel didn't burst. Won a BR match with it after that incident.

How is that possible? Simply amazing!  Shocked  Let's see, what else can I think up to worry about, hmmmmmm........?

I've been trying to search for the "metallurgists letter" that ypu referred to in the other thread.   No Joy.   Could you provide a pointer?  Or republish?    Thanks!

The softer steel will most often stretch rather than burst or fracture. I think if there were a problem it would be visible before it burst. now I am not talking about extremely high pressure you can blow just about anything up if you try hard enough. I am talking about normal loads. that said I am sure there will not be any problem unless the load is on the hot side and you beat the rifle up with continued use of higher than normal pressure. I would use 12l14 steel more if I could find it in other than round and octagon I have looked and cant find square and flat. most of what I make doesn't require high strength but good finish is nice.

if you think you have it figured out  then you just dont understand
