Fixing a 'too big' dovetail?

I've been working on a 'Schuetzen style' .22 rifle built on a Stevens 'Favorite' action with a full octagon barrel.  The front sight dovetail is way too big for any sight I've tried...must be 3/4".  Silver solder a piece into the dovetail, do the same instead to the sight? any thoughts on this.  BTW, the barrel is a 1915 Stevens, as I recall, had to shorten the chamber end a bit and rechamber by a small amount.  Bill

So you already silver soldered a piece into the dovetail and it's still too big? I gues the question is how much too big? A few thousandths can be made up for by dimpling the bottom of the sight dovetail which raises it slightly higher and into closer engagement with the barrel dovetail. It sounds as though you are much farther off than that.... Guess silver soldering a piece onto the opposite side of the sight could work. Would want to keep the two soldered edges away from each other.

Of course I had one rifle where someone simply silver soldered the sight in place....

Gents,

I've always followed the first rule of gunsmithing when repairing an altered mess.  Concentrate on the cheapest, easiest to replace, or most messed up part first.  My first impression would make the front sight my first choice, just in case all goes awry.  However, all that usually proves to be nothing more than a great theory.

In this case, with as big a gap as you indicate, that may dictate installing a front or rear filler block filed into the shape of a parallelogram that precisely matches one side of the existing dovetail for near invisible fit.  You may have to actually file the already oversize dovetail a bit to get a uniform surface to work with.  Retain the filler with a single very small #2 or 3 countersunk screw and Loctite.  Make the filler a bit bigger than needed and then file the installed filler block to fit the sight and contour of the barrel.  Careful workmanship and finish touchup should yield a nearly invisible and very functional repair.  Depending on the filler screw location and the type of sight, it may even be possible to completely hide the screw when the sight is driven in place.

The filler could also be soft soldered into place, but it will be nearly impossible to hide the solder filled gap.

Recently picked up a Rolling Block #1 Sporter in .22LR at the Reno gun show last Nov., and the front sight dovetail was a mess! It looked like someone tried to cut a large dovetail with a hacksaw blade. Then they took a file and cut another 3/8" dovetail in the bottom of the first screwed up dovetail! So the sight was barely visible above the top barrel flat.
I knew it needed either a new barrel, or someone more talented than me! I have a resource who's a retired tool and die maker, so off to his house we went! He cut an even larger dovetail in the barrel that took out all the old mess. Then he milled a filler block that was a press fit for the new dovetail. He used Loctite on the filler, and tapped it into place. Then it was milled down to the barrel contour, and polished to match. After that, a new 3/8" dovetail was cut in it, and the sight installed again. Here's the finished repair with a little Oxpho Blue touch up.:

Can't take credit for it, but I'll pass it along to my friend!

At this point, I have made a little piece of steel to wedge between the sight and old dovetail, but haven't soldered anything.  I could only find a Marbles peep to go on the rear which is a bit high, therefore I have a pretty high front sight.  I have also a nice globe sight with level I'm thinking but want to shoot it a bit first.

Same friend built this sight for my Whitney Roller. It had been D&T for an oddball 1.687" spacing, and no tang sight available for the spacing. He builds these gallery style long range tang sights, so he made up a special base for one to fit my Whitney.
