Have a cast frame Ballard about to be lined with a TJ liner. Would the 32 H&R mag be too much?

Yes, unless you load it with .32 Long data. I'd sure make sure it wasn't re-marked as a .32 H&R Magnum! Or chamber it for .32 S&W Long, even better!

It is going to either be a 32-20 or a 32 long. I have all the fixins for 32-20 so probably will go that direction. Was just curious.

32-20 is the way I am considering too but I need to find a .308 32-20 reamer to complete the job.

Good luck,

Marlin did make the #2 in .32-20, but not long. Pretty scarce, and I always figured they were limited because the caliber was a bit stout. I've only seen two, and own one of them. They all are early JM Marlin marked receivers, which would indicate they dropped the cartridge in the #2 later.
Mine needs a reline also, and will be a .32-20 again. I've always kept my loads down to under 1,000 fps. with a 90 grain bullet.

If I were to go with 32 long will the TJ liner bore(305/312) be sufficient since it was a pistol round. Also will the 1/16 twist work.

Will it work? Depends on what bullet/charge you're planning. The twist is fast enough for all the standard bullets designed for the .32 S&W Long. If you start pushing very heavy bullets down the bore, it might not be fast enough. I wouldn't go over a 110 grain cast bullet.

A 16 twist should take a 7/8's long bullet w/o any problem, maybe a little longer but, the problem would be finding one in that range, that is at least .313.

Thanks guys for your input. The gun was in 32 long orig. so I should probably go with that so I don't mess with the cal. markings. The gun will be used for plinking and close up target etc... Plus I may want to sell it one day and don't want to have to worry about the next owner. I know you are probably thinking I should make up my mind. I think I have now. Besides 32 long fixins can be had easily.

Most of the fixings can be had easily, except the cases! That's the one area we lack, and making them from .32 S&W Long is a pain to get sized down to the rim.

I've got a cast frame Ballard #2 in 32 Long that has a bore that is barely usable.  The rifle does not so much group as pattern, so I am planning on a TJ liner for it.  I have decided to have the liner chambered for the 32 S&W Long instead of the 32 Long.  My reason for this is the ease of reloading and I can use standard dies rather than the very expensive dies available for the 32 Long. The really big reason is, as Vall has stated, 32 Long cases are hard to find and difficult to form from 32 S&W L brass.

Actually they are only $41.75 with a 2 to 3 month wait. The Ballard Extra Long is $43.75. The 32 S&W Long sounds good to me since the barrel is being altered from original anyway and has to be rechambered.

Since the gun is altered, and the #2 Ballard is usually a reasonably priced gun, the value wont be hurt making it .32 S&W Long. In fact it may well increase in value to those who want to shoot it.
