DZ Arms 8x Unertl style scope

I bought one of these a while ago for my long range rifle but decided today to put it on my CPA as the LR rifle is is not drilled and tapped yet.

For anyone not familiar with these scopes they are an 8x, 3/4" tube scope with "no-click" Unertl style mounts.  They have 0.2" more range than a standard Unertl mount, and use POSA blocks.   I like this scope a little more than my MVA B5 actually, although it is pricier.

It really suits the CPA too, better I think than the 18x Unertl I took off of it:

This morning I took it to the range to test some black powder loads in preparation for the black powder benchrest match this spring in Tacoma.  I have to decide yet which rifles to bring Smiley.

Results were good, one of the best groups this rifle has shot at just past 220 yards, with 9 of twelve going into well under a minute of angle:

If you are looking for a new traditional style scope the DZ Arms 8x might be of interest to you.

The only thing I would change about the DZ Arms scope would be to make the crosshairs a little thinner.  They are a little thicker than the MVA.

I'll have to fiddle with the 18x Unertl a bit more.  It seems that I can't quite get all of the parallax out of it.  I think this is why I've shot the best targets using the MVA and DZ Arms scopes on this rifle, even though they have much less magnification.

I also have a bigger tube Unertl which is very clear with excellent fine crosshairs with a center dot, but it looks a little out of place on my traditional rifles.  I have it on my other CPA with the benchrest forearm.

The secret to Parallax...two scopes. I use a 20X Lyman ST for all 100 yd, A 25X Lyman for 200 yd. Both fine tuned for Parallax then just do different settings when I switch to  different guns, for out Wyoming Schuetzen Matches. The big 36X is for CPA, ASSRA, just looks cooler than I Leupold....etc. Pete

I use the DZ Arms scope for sihouette and like it a lot. I do wish that it would be offered with a thinner cross hair. As earlier stated I think it's a better scope than the MVA B5.

I looked long and hard at DZ 8X scope but bought an MVA 23" 6X because my old, cataract-dimmed eyes cannot, could not see fine cross hairs unless they are part of a duplex reticle (such as Leupold). MVA had a reticle that can be used same way and has worked well for me. Still, I like DZ scope and especially mounts much better -- may install his Unertl mounts on my MVA (has their #2 B-series mounts presently).

You guys have some good ideas.

Dave I like the idea of a benchrest match ( or a schuetzen offhand match ) at the Heffley match.  I think a lot of those guys haven't heard a lot about these types of matches and it would be a nice introduction.  Les told me that years ago he tried to add a schuetzen match but there was little interest.  Maybe it's time to try again.  I would definitely be interested.  I plan on brining one of my CPA's this year so the guys can have a look at it at least.

I saw that you had a match the other day.  Not at Spruce Grove I guess?

I will be gunning for you at Tacoma Chris.  I have my 38-55 High Wall shooting black pretty well.  I am working on my latest acquisition, a 25-20 WCF Low Wall.  Took it out for the second time today, but got fogged out just as it was showing promise.  I have until May at Spokane to get it singing!

Chris:

Next BPCR shoot at Heffley Creek I can bring my .32 RKS  Miller and we can have a fun single shot bench rest competition at 200 or 300 yards.

And I can fill you in on some Canadian secrets we do not reveal to Schuetzenmiester Bob.  Roll Eyes

Dave

With secrets galore, family barrels, and secret lube, why are you afraid to come to the coast and shoot Dave?  Cheesy

Dave

It's about 150 miles and should take less than 3 hours.  Weekday can be brutal during morning or late afternoon.  So Joe moved to Arco to get away from the cold?    Wet maybe. especially this fall.

Dave, If you can get enough bullets cast for all your matches, come on down. We will take up a collection for you.  It should be ready by Sunday afternoon at the prize giving in the Winner's Circle. It will be genuine Yankee Green. Don't worry about the Canadian dollar sinking.  You could bring an old clunker to sell if it makes you feel better, but I doubt you'll need it.

Tacoma isn't that far. We have doctors in the US now that Obamacare is in affect. And I know CPR.

Wet, yeah  Cool but never cold any more.  Hardly ever freezes.  T-shirt and shorts weather for Canadians. I keep a big golf umbrella in my truck in case an out-of towner shows up at a match

Come on down!

Bob

PS. Bring a few extra bullets if you aren't experienced in the Tacoma Condition. Some times guys take a little while getting used to shooting between the rain drops. You won't need  any windflags, but be sure to bring enough rain gauges to place in your normal flag locations.

Jack I am using Dave's super secret Alberta Schuetzen Lube.  It will add at least a few points Smiley

My main problem right now is that I don't have a lot of bullets to play with.  I'd set my hopes on paper patched bullets in my new CPA so have a bunch of those but that might not be the best bet.   I might have to try some casting but it's -15 C at the cabin these days.   I also am getting ready for a big long range shoot in Phoenix in March.   If I don't get to the casting shack I'll have to bring my Ruger again I guess.

I know what you mean about the fog.  The other day I was only able to see out to 100m, and even had to stop for a while so I could see the bullet holes Smiley.   But hey, at least it's not too cold...

I nearly bought a low wall in .25-20 SS once.  Foolishly I passed on it.  It was a nice looking rifle.

Chris.

I cast 60 more bullets today and hope to get out Saturday for more trials.  I will try to remember the shell holder for my RCBS priming too this time.  Had to seat primers with a cleaning rod piece and a hammer.
