22 Rimfire Benchrest Question
Dec 30th, 2015 at 12:52pm
Print Post

I plan on shooting 22rimfire next year in some matches . My question is what size,100 yd., groups can I hope for from a benchrest rifle with good ammo ?
I purchased a Hoch heavy barreled rifle from a member here and so far 1/2" for 5 shot groups is the best I can do , so what should I be able to average ?

Thanks for any help

!/2" is good for 5 shots but, the target takes 10 and the center is 3/4". If you can shoot a 7/8-1" 10 shot groups, most of the time, you'll do well, especially in ISSA.

Watch out for that wind though Smiley

Frank,

Was it you who earlier mentioned breech seating 22 rf bullets?  How did that work out if it was you?

Keep in mind that most ASSRA Matches are at 200 yards. Get some ASSRA targets. Or make your own with the same size scoring rings. Study the Match Results posted on this forum. Keep in mind the record score is now 247-7. Practice whenever you get the opportunity. (Nothing wrong with starting at 100 yards.) Keep seeking ammunition that shoots as well or better than anything you now have. If you find the "magic ammo", buy all you can get for the future. Pay attention to details ........... your set-up, hold, breathing, wind, mirage, distractions. Learn how to relax. Don't rush a shot. Don't get hung up on the competition. Just be the best you can be. You are not alone .......... I and many others are in the same boat with you - working hard. Enjoying a great sport. Good shooting will be your reward.

Yes, it was. I was able to win matches with it.

I'm building a new rifle this year, just for that.

My best 5 shot group, shot when working loads up, back in 1991.

.22 matches are at 100 yards.  Some matches have a 200 yard BR match. Usually a single target.  The 200 yard .22 BR match at Cody was so tough I never did it. Waste of expensive ammo.

If you want to get into a extremely competitive 22rf match, come join us at the Stars & Stripes Match at Nine Miles Falls, WA.

Bring LOTS of that expensive match ammo, too. It will take you about 8 boxes ( 8 x ~$27 = $216) of it to shoot the whole thing.

100 yard, 22 RF Bench Rest, 100 shots
50 yard ASBR Targets, 100 shots

Plus two 40 shot matches, before and after the match above.

Frank, et al. .......... Does ASSRA put on any 100 yd RF BR matches? I don't see them at E.G. ........... kinda figured they were sort of "local preference type" events, but not nationally recognized. Don't mean to sound like I'm downgrading the 100 yd. stuff .............. am working with a BSA Martini myself for them (100 yard)  and have a long way to go to be competitive.  Regardless of distance - 22RF BR is probably one of the most difficult and frustrating events I've ever encountered.

Yup, ya gotta find the right ammo  Cry

Tacoma shoots both 100 and 200 as well as offhand. I assume Steve will continue the same matches we have shot for years.

Key element shooting targets is calling your shot and confirming strike on target. It's the only way to read conditions and make corrections . No matter what the flags say if you can't confirm you are guessing.

In theory 22 Rimfires will shoot high scores at 200 yards and some high scores have been shot. I think Steve Garbe shot a very high Hudson score 200 offhand one time.  Norm is another matter. Difficulty spotting 22 holes at 200 introduces a strong luck factor in any long range rimfire match .  Three top competitions for 22 rifles, Smallbore prone, Silhouette and Rimfire bench are shot between 40 and 100 meters. Reason is all 3 are test of skill with miminal luck factor. Some clubs run special 200, not many.

Use the official targets different disciplines for pratice. Schuetzen I only shoot ASSRA targets at match distances. We have 50 foot 50 yard and 100 yard rimfire targets.

Asked about his good luck after a NASCR race Richard Petty said " Luck my friend is when preparation meets opportunity " 200 yards rimfire no wind day is opportunity. Prepared you may get lucky.

Here on the far Left coast, the Tuesday Afternoon Schuetzen Verein holds far more rimfire matches than centerfire.  Personally, I think it is just that we are mostly old geezers and it is easier to take a box of rimfires out of your stash than it is to cast bullets (or buy them) and go through the rest of the CF routine.

We always throw the gates wide open for our Tuesday shoots.  If we're shooting RF, young guys (& girls even) are welcome to shoot the modern stuff.  Once in a while we get a real convert.  Mostly the younger folks have other demands on their time & $$ and just can't afford to jump into single shots at the retail or competitive level.

We shoot RF at 200 quite often, both OH & bench.  Our scores do not match those posted above, but we have a lot of fun & complain a lot about mirage & wind.  Most of us do not shoot the really top end stuff (Tenex, etc).  As long as the RF shoots better than we can hold and doesn't have too many outrageous flyers per box, it's good enough.
