I want a 60 or 100 round box for 45-70 with the bullets UP. Oh, and a closing lid with handle.

I don't think MTM makes a box that will do that.

What's a poor shooter to do?

Cool

I took a 100 round MTM box that held rounds bullet down and pulled the plastic insert out and made wooden blocks that hold 16 round each and put them into the box. That gives me a capacity of 64. I think that other than that your other option is to have one custom made to hold what you want. I am not sure if anyone on this site does that kind of work but I do know of a guy over on the Shiloh Rifle forum that does excellent work on boxes. I think he goes by the name of Woody over there but I would not swear to it. I have seen pics of his boxed and they appear to be second to none and I think that there are a couple of options on layout and construction.

What poor shooters used to do.
Get some pieces of wood, some hardware, a drill and spade bit (or old brace and bits), and with some elbow grease, get er' done.      Grin

I made up some loading blocks from ballistic grade lexan 1" thick and coated with prussian blue spray and laid it out so I got 50 holes. used a forstener bit (spelling isn't right) and a trust drill press. Frank

Check with Richard "Woody" Wood at "Woody's Shooting Boxes"   970-620-1042. He makes very a variety of nice custom ammo boxes.

I also use the MTM R100 .410 box for my larger cartridges. Works great, but not as pretty as a nice wood box.

I've got several of the R-100 boxes, but they do not allow 45-70 based cases to be held nose-up.  Does anybody know if the R-100 Mag allows 45-70 cases to be put in case head down?

+1. I shoot several matches each season with Woody (Richard Wood) and use one of his ammo boxes as well as one of his small (he makes two sizes) range boxes. He will make them out of about any wood you ask for and 1st-rate quality.

Travis at Cal-Graph also makes excellent ammo & range boxes as well as other wood products.

I have a bunch of 50rd plastic ammo boxes that allow the cartridge to set in case-head down. If that would interest you I'll see who made them and the model. Think I paid ~$7/box.

Woody definitely makes good stuff.  And he'll customize his boxes to suit your needs.  I have a couple of his line boxes and will likely order a few of his ammo boxes this year.

Another option is to buy a few of the Buffalo Ams deep wooden loading blocks.  You could pretty easily build a 100 round box around two of those.

Well, it only holds 50 rounds and it doesn't have a handle on top, but today I got a couple of MTM Case-Gard 50 model RMLD-50 for the WSMs and SAUMs, also listing 45-70 and several others.

My 40-65 cartridges will fit in nose-up just fine.  I don't know if that means that the R-100 series Magnum case will fit the 45-70 nose up, but it does have a handle and holds 100 cases.

Ahhh - just checked MTM's chart - looks like the R-100-MAG will NOT hold a 45-70 bullet up - only down.  Here's a link to the chart: (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

I modified the big MTM to carry 100 45-2.6.  Just cut the plastic so the base would fit in a little deeper.

I was trying to find such a box for my 40-70SS, and sent off a dummy round to a dealer here in the UK who checked all the boxes that he had in stock. I cannot remember which ones he sent but will check later or tomorrow to see if my 45-70 rounds fit.
Off the Birmingham for the day, but do you think I could find any museums on the net to show off their past gun industry!
The same in Sheffield, not much on knife making in times gone by. Nothing to do with ammo boxes I know.

This MTM 20 ga shot shell box would do it.  50 on top, 50 on the bottom.
