I've just acquired my first scope for my 1885 Highwall.  It's a Lyman STS 20X in mint condition.  (unbelievable)  I've never used a scope and the adjustment dials may as well be printed in Greek for all I know about them.  Can anyone tell me where I can find a printout (or digital .pdf) of the instructions sheets for this scope?

Read the manual but that is not your starting point:
* Attach scope bases to rifle
* Mount scope. Adjust cross hairs per STS manual
* Insert bore sighter into bore and follow instructions
(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)
The sighter screen is graduated in 4" increments.
* Adjust windage &  elevation on the scope to the '100' W & E line on the bore sighter
* Record the windage & elevation to derive a 'zero' 100yd base line scope setting
* Go to the range and bore sight the barrel at 100yds to the target center.  Best to have a buddy holding the rifle steady.  * Adjust scope knobs
* Fire one round
* Place cross hairs on the target bullet hole.  If it is a center hit - no adjustment needed.  If not -
* With the crosshairs still on the bullet hole - adjust scope to center POA
* Fire the 2nd round - you should be at target center POA - adjust scope knobs accordingly
* Record scope W & E to your new 100 yd 'zero' setting for that bullet loading data.

johnboy,

Are you sure that you've got that 2-shot scope zero sequence right?  I've always done it by:
1.  Clamp rifle in a rifle rest or vice so it won't move when you fiddle with the scope settings,

2. put crosshairs on aiming point (e.g. center X-ring), fire a shot,

3. adjust the crosshairs from the aiming point to the bullet hole without moving the rifle.

(in actual practice, I worked with 3-round groups)
