giving thanks to Green Frog...

Print Post
While browsing the messages I found that Mr. Green Frog had proclaimed that a load of 13.6 gr. of 4759 powder over a bullet of 196 gr. was very accurate for him in fixed loading of .32-40.
Well, a long time went by and I finally got around to trying that very combination. Voila!, as they say somewhere.
I've been pursuing fixed loads for a while now, and decided to try this one out, just for the heck of it. Twenty shots in four groups. Four bullet holes overlapping each time and one just a skosh out because I can't shoot any better when I get excited- yeah, four times! By the way, the bullet mold came from the Jerry Simmons estate via ebay. Great load for my rifle- Thanks, Frog. Pat

I just needed to get this one out of me today. I have been getting some real good results with fixed for a while- but more is always welcome.
Anyhow, it was cold and some guy was shooting a frickin' machine gun, and I still got four real fine groups in a row. That just shoudn't happen on a day like this one.
All of my loads with that powder have stopped short of that amount, so it was a pretty pleasing experiment. Yes?
My groups with .30 American cases have gone under 5/8 inch from time to time. These, with old WW .32 Spl cases were all that small . I'm jazzed. Good ol' Green Frog.

Reb, that powder is (as far as I know) defunct. I've still got a fair supply- and it's not going to do any good not to shoot it up.
I use other powders, but this is one that's always been reliable for many. Sad to see it go-again.
While we are on the subject- do any of you out there have ideas for the best powder to replace it?

I found 4227 best in 32-40 and 4759 best in 38-55, YMMV  Shocked

Based on the advice given here I have been using 14grs IMR4227 (Hoch 322200 208gr non-tapered, 2.65" COAL) in my .32-40 fived cartridges.  Accuracy is about 2-3 inches at 100yds with Soule tang sight.  I' m convinced it should be better because I did a lousy job of casting.

Guys,  I have annointed 4227 as my favorite powder in several cases. Never, never run out of that one, I always say. Versatile, easy measuring and advice aplenty for this powder.
But, as so often happens sometimes other choices are made by the bullets themselves. And, 4759 is often their choice. I use it in a number of bigger bores, and have found it very good in things like my 40-82 for instance. I also use it in my .32-40 with good results. I have never gone above 13.2 gr. until I tried the "Green Frog" load yesterday. In my rifle, and his it seems, the bigger charge was very good indeed.
Now, to find it's eventual replacement for the inevitable time it is gone for good.....................................
Reb, as a matter of fact, I too, would have told you the 14/4227 load for your rifle, it will probably do a much better job with some refinement of your bullet, lube, or loading. It will about always shoot real well for me. Sorta fits as a "standard" load for that round with many bullets. Keep piddling with it.
And, thanks guys for the comments, you can always get some sound advice on this board.

I've used IMR4227 with great success on my .38-55 loads.  It's a good powder.  Wonder if anyone knows what kind of load this Green Frog might recommend for the .38-55?

I note that Green Frog doesn't post very often these days, I sincerely hope all is well with him.

Every now and then, you can run into him posting on other forums about handguns, cast boolits, etc.

As they say, "Speak of the Devil..."  Smiley

Thanks for the kind words, calledflyer, but I can only take a little credit for calling folks' attention to that 4759 load.  Somewhere in the old Roberts & Waters book there was reference to using that powder in about that weight range, and Charlie Dell told me when I was starting out that 4759 was not as likely to ring barrels as some of the others, so that's what I went with.  It seemed that an old original barreled high wall I had (and still have) preferred that charge regardless of the bullet from 165 to 200 grains.  Smiley Since I'm not shooting as much 32-40 offhand as I used to, I'm hoping that my current stash of 4759 will outlast my shooting career... thanks go to Dale53 for supplementing said stash.  Smiley

As for questions asked about alternate loads or calibers, I have had very good results fixed with 4227 and a 200 grain bullet (the mould for which I foolishly let get away) but my 38-55 experience is so minuscule as to not be worthy of mention.   Smiley

Regards,
Froggie

Well, then thanks to all the others who suggested it as well, then. You are too humble methinks.
I read Roberts and Waters, and even others possibly. I use 4759 as part of my development in suitable cases as a regular thing too. (darn I hate it being discontinued). I never used as much as that load, getting good results somewhat lower with three or four bullets. But, the place I saw it that stuck was from your posting- and it worked to a charm. So, for the times I use it in the future it will remain affectionately known as "the Green Frog" load.
And, it's nice to get to thank you in person- or at least on the board. Pat Smiley
