.22 RF Barrel For MY CPA Stevens
Nov 11th, 2015 at 1:45pm
Print Post
My Stevens 44 1/2 is about a month or so away from completion and I am thinking about adding a .22 RF barrel and breech block to the build.
I would like to elicit some opinions.

1. Which make barrel make should I choose?

2. Will a match chamber be more accurate?  I started separating my .22 RF ammo by weight and rim thickness back in the 80s and found I got better accuracy than depending on a match chamber alone.  I know some rifles like one type of ammo better than others.

3. Is there any advantage to buying a separate fore arm if the CF barrel and the .22 RF barrel are the same dimensions, weight, etc?

All advise will be appreciated.

Most diffently! There are many match chambers though.

I think the best all round, tight chamber is the ANSCHUTZ. For a match chamber that will take almost any ammo, the PTG Match is much looser. For the tightest chamber, the Freeland, fits the bill. The standard SAAMI match has a 5 deg lead but, I think 2 deg and less works better.

Many, many choices!

I have read a lot of positive info. on the Shilen Rachet barrel.

I think going with a 16" twist is probably the best option.

As far as chambers, WOW, I didn't realize how many different chambers were cut for .22's.  So many choices. Years ago, I had an Anschutz 54 barreled action in a McMillan FG stock that won many 100 yd. aspirin tablet shoots.  Smiley

Those big Martini's were specifically made as prone rifles - which does require quite a different stock design and balance than for offhand.  I believe only the Mk IV was also designed with standing in mind, but not sure aven there.

Mine came with an adjustable schuetzen buttplate in addition to a "flat" one.

+1 for the 2 deg or less on the lead.  The match chamber should force the bullet into the rifling.  The less the bullet is disturbed the better.

YUp - they almost all had an adjustable buttplate - also useful for prone.

First of all ask Paul or Gail what they have in stock and follow their advice as to chamber. As far as barrels it is going to depend on how long you want to wait. The RKS barrels are very nice, I have heard good things about the Shilen barrels but never seen one in action, day in and day out it’s hard to beat a Douglas air gauged rimfire barrel. Get the forend for the barrel it will be fit properly to the barrel and will be one less thing you have to change over.

Before you spend a bunch of $$ on a barrel, decide what it is that you really want to do.

Then spend on < $40 on Bill Calfee's book "The Art of Rimfire Accuracy" from that Amazon print-on-demand source and read the book very carefully.  I did and I became the equivalent of a Born Again Christian when it comes to rimfire accuracy.  Calfee really makes you think.

Thanks for the advice, but I know what I want to do.  I am having a CPA Pope Style Schuetzen rifle in .25-20 WCF built for off hand shooting.  I would like to have a matching .22 RF rifle built for RF matches, but being semi-retired and 71 y.o. my "fun funds" are limited unless I sell off some guns I want to keep. I figure that having an auxiliary .22 RF barrel would be my most affordable route but not my first choice.  That is why I am asking about makes of barrels, chambers, fore arms and such. I am trying to pick up where I left off from the late 80s.
In the 70s and 80s I shot a lot of BR, CF and RF.  I remember when Bill Calfee started really promoting .22 RF bench rest and all the experimenting he did wringing out the most accuracy he could from the .22 RF. He had a lot of articles in "BR" magazine on the .22 RF.

Added.  I just bought the Kindle edition for $9.99 of Bill's book. Seeing the cover reminds me when Bill built his 1st XP-100 .22RF.  Everyone wanted one. He would do a build if you sent him your XP-100 and a 40X rimfire bolt plus a lot of $$$.  Remington would not sell a bolt because it was a factory install. Very few options left, so I will leave it up to you to fill in the blank.   Undecided

GeorgeC & 40Rod,  A couple of years back I stepped into this game with a new CPA, 22LR, Shilen 28" 16TW barrel and full BR furniture per Paul's  recommendations. A Weaver 36-T scope on top. Check match results to see ........... unbeatable at 200 yds with good Eley Match. I'm still struggling at 100 yds., but shooting either an old 414 Armory Model or my BSA Mk 2. In summation ............ the Shilen can't be beat. Listen to Paul. He knows of what he speaks. .............. and, I say that with the greatest of respect for both his experience, his gunsmithing and his willingness to share knowledge.

OkeyMaple and 40Rod. I haven't spoken to Paul. I sent an email to get a price on the cost to add a finished barrel and wood to match the rifle they are building for me.  There has been no discussion on brand, twist, and chamber.  I decided to get some feedback from any members who shoot a CPA in .22 RF, mainly as an add -on barrel before I made up my mind. The barrel I ordered in .25-20 WCF is a Douglas air gauged. I had planned to talk to Paul before I ordered. Being out of serious shooting for over 20 years, a lot of changes come about and in my opinion the way to get back up to speed is to ask the questions and hope to get the answers that will help me. Thanks to both of you and everyone who has given their opinions. Keep the "cards and letters coming".   Smiley

I have done very well at 200 yards with a Douglas barrel on my CPA using Fiocchi 320SM. I am not sure there is a magic barrel or ammunition. One needs a lot of luck to get a combination that works.

Laurie, no truer words have ever been spoken.  A lot of prep goes along with that luck.
