32-40 with 8mm nose rider bullet?

Since there are no schuetzen matches near where I live, I've taken to shooting my High Wall with tapered throat using fixed ammo, firing the 200 grain "Pope Style" bullet cast from a Saeco mould. I'm using @14 grains of IMR 4227 and CCI large pistol primers. Very accurate by my measure in the cowboy silhouette matches. -Of course my skills still need improvement. Smiley

I am finding that wind drift is a killer with this combination. So I got to thinking, what if I were to start casting maybe a 180 grain gas checked bullet with larger charges of slower burning powders to up velocity, and perhaps launch a more streamlined, nose rider type bullet?

Anybody know whether such a combination would shoot well with a tapered throat?

Most people are very challenged to get a fixed 32/40 load with any bullet to a competitive level with breech seating.

I don't know of a good bore riding 32 or 8mm spitzer to tell you about but, the Lyman/Ideal 321297, is a bore riding 32 cal, gc, FP. It looks just like the 311041.

BSed, I've shot the 323366 modified to PB at 1600 fps with accuracy and the 323471 to 2150 fps with a GC again, with accuracy.

Wind drift is at it's worst in the 1450 - 1500 fps range and is less on both sides of that velocity, down to 900 fps and up to about 2200 fps and then continues to be less above that. It may seem odd but, wind drift is approximately equal at 900 fps and 2200 fps.

frankore, if I understood the first sentence correctly, the 32-40 is difficult to make competitive when breach seated?

Stubbicat,

I read Frank to mean that he finds that you can't load 32-40 fixed ammo that is competitive with the finer accuracy possible with breech seating.

Thanks guys for clarifying that. For a moment there I felt about like I did when I found out there was no Santa Claus.  Cry

Upon reading the sentence again, it is as clear as day what Frank meant. Don't know why I couldn't figure that out yesterday.

Don't mean to hijack and apologies if this works that way--but I found a mfr of 200 grain cast 32-40 bullets--and sadly failed to successfully store that site on my computer--can anyone recommend such a seller? Just want to shoot 32-40 fixed ammo @200 yds in a relined Win mod 94 and a rebarreled Highwall--nothing fancy.
thanks

I have a Ruger no.1 with a Douglas barrel 1-14 twist
shooting a Lyman 323471, 15 BHN, Hornady gas check, sized to 321 for my gun, a recommended load of IMR3031, or Hodgdon Benchmark, will shoot minute of Ram at 500M, as long as you can hang on to it...6.5-24X40 scope, factory trigger, no rest
If you are shooting Cowboy Silhouette the load can be backed down for the 200yds rams
