Last time I shot in Canada, Colleen kick my rear end in the regular matches and Pat Weber aced me out in the King match. I didn't know Pat was Canadian  Roll Eyes

Here's a frontal shot of a decent black bear I killed more than 30 years ago (with a 45-70.)  From the picture it can be seen that a bear's eyes are on the outside of the skull.  Shooting a bear in the eye from straight on would probably result in a really pissed off one eyed bear.  It looks like a shot right up the snout would have a good chance of hitting the brain.  Concerning Canadian women, all of them that I know are Yukoners.  I'd rather have to face an angry bear than an angry Yukon woman.

I've learned a couple of things today - one is the way a bear's eyes lay in the skull - I guess that might be the first good look at a bear skull I've seen.  We just didn't have bears where I grew up.

Next is the  Boreal Forest - I'd never heard that term before so I had to do a bit of research on it.  WOW!!!  That's one big forest!  Just too far north for this old Southern boy - ya'll have SNOW up there!

Right between the jaw bones is a good shot to stop a big one that has been shot through both lungs and the heart and hasn't figured out he is dead yet.   Little average ones under 200 # drop in their tracks.  When they start getting 2x that size, they get a little harder to convince they should just lay down.

I knew an experienced bear hunter (100s of bear chases) who emptied a 30-30 into a big boar that fell at his feet.  He moved up to a .444 Marlin the next day.

To answer your specific question yes the Lee 459-405 is a good choice as a hunting bullet. It gives me good accuracy and you can tailor the load to the game in 45-70. I cast 24:1 for everything. Barrel is a 32" 20:1 twist

White tail in my home area (heavy brush close range)I load it over Black with a 3gr kicker of H4198 for 1600fps. This just gives me a more consistent POI between shot 1 and shot 2

For hogs and black bear I load a top level 2 load of H4198 which in my gun gives 2150fps and 4000lbs of energy. No there is nothing friendly about this load but ideally you only pull the trigger once.

Of course your gun will offer different results but my experience has been good with this bullet. My experience with the 325, 340 and 360 gr'ers has been abysmal

Boy, I'll bet 4,000 lbs of energy does pack a whoop on both ends!  I"m not at all sure this would be safe for a Trapdoor load, but "might" work in my rolling block with modern barrel.  Any idea of pressure?

Thanks for info

Oh ya that load would be a disaster in a trapdoor

It's advertised at 39,400 cup. Top level load for a modern levergun....however I have yet to see a levergun that wasn't showing pressure signs with this load

However my gun is fine with it.
