Loading at the bench question

I shoot 45-70 Sharps but have not attended a Schuetzen match. Have done silhouette and regular target.

How many folks load at the bench?
Paper patched bullets will be made ahead of time.
I plan on just using stuff like a Lee Loader (tap out primer, brush out case, tap in new primer, volume measure powder, tap down compress with a marked dowel, hand seat bullet).

Any advice would be appreciated.

Since you are using paper patched bullets I'm guessing that you are probably using black powder.  If so then i'd consider making a case scraper from a jigsaw blade like in Randolph Wright's book.  That works better than a brush for me. The trick is getting the case consistently nice and clean after each shot.  I shoot where it is often humid and the bp residue very quickly absorbs water from the air and becomes messy.  I scrape the residue into a paper cup.

In order to get the interior of the scraper to match the case I sectioned a case ( after deburring the flash hole completely ) and then ground the scraper to match the bottom of the case.

I use a Harrell's measure, pope style de-re capper from Buffalo Arms, and a drop tube.  I'm still trying to reduce the weight of the stuff I bring.

Chris.

This is a picture of Don Duff loading at the bench; he's breech-seating a bullet as Russ Hooks looks through the spotting scope.

Loading at the bench is more fun for me. Started out that way. Once the routine is down and with the right tools can load fast. Before I got fancy bullet boxes, used to bring the bullets still in the lube to a match. Popped them out as I needed them.

Thanks for all the advice. I will need to visit a match before deciding if Schuetzen is for me. I don't care if I win or lose, I shoot against myself.

I am more of a historical traditionalist when it comes to calibers, powder, reloading techniques.

Schuetzen may not be for me and I may just be relegated to wondering the earth in woe shooting by myself and against myself in the desert.

Need to look into the scraper idea....been brushing out cases with a bore brush.

Thanks again.

I sent you a PM yesterday, please read, it should fill you in about matches in the Phoenix area. There are upcoming events you could attend.
Best of luck

There are indeed two Americas. Simply put, it is not the haves and have nots. The two Americans are in reality divided into those who do and those who don't.

You will like Schuetzen and the people. The place to learn and a great place to pick up an outfit.

When I changed from traditional large cases to the short .357 based cases I tried preloading 50 cases at a time my scores suffered. When I went back to loading at the bench one at a time my scores went back up. This may be a personal observation but I have never felt the time that I spent reloading at the bench ever hindered me in any way. If the wind cooperates I can get of twenty well-aimed shots. I don’t think that you can get many more shots off in a forty five minute relay than that while breech-seating.

Skalkaho timed me loading at the bench a couple years ago. Was using a Ballard 38-55. Don't remember my average time but it was surprisingly short. Less than a minute and a half.

Here's 40_Rod showing us how it's done.

After watching Joe at 2014 Montana championship  and timing him, what I saw was A way to actually relax alittle between shots. I just havent gotten around to trying it, still not there yet with the extra time and still fiddling with my rifles.Pete
