Case separation and flower foam placement

I have been having a problem with cases separating (32-20) right at the shoulder/bottleneck. loads of Accurate #9 and 4100  8-9 grains. I have always pushed the flower foam wad to the top of the powder. Is this wrong? I now keep the wad at the mouth and have not had any separations.Could this have been the problem all along? If so why?

Just out of curiosity, how thick is your flower foam? I load my 32/20 with 4.8 gr. of Unique and 115 gr. bullet. I place the wade right on top of the powder. I cut the wad as thin as I can. About 1/16th in. or thinner. Have never had any type of problem with casings. Using star casings and Uberti 1885 low wall.boho wrote on Oct 24th, 2015 at 12:43pm:

The simple answer is never put a wad of any type right down on the powder period never. When you do you set up the perfect conditions to ring your chamber. Put the wad between .050” to .100” off the powder. For best results orient the powder to the wad and let the powder slump at the primer end.

Thanks for your responses. I think from now on I will keep it off the powder. If the  cases continue to separate I want to re chamber. I have had too many come apart.
Every time I pull out the case I am looking to see if it's still all there.I haven't fired enough rounds with the wad at the top to really know if this will end the separations.
I am shooting a 32-20/.30 the bullet and barrel are .30 (.308) I want to keep it .30
The bullet is 189grns and 1.105"long it's a tapered Barnett and it shoots well. The barrel has a 10 twist. I would like to know what my options are for re-chambering.

Just shot some rounds the same way in my 30-20 - cork wad seated some distance above the powder level, with black.  All cases completely intact, no case separations.  The issue for me is indeed seating the wad directly on top of the powder, a perfect recipe for chamber ringing...

Bob,
This is a case design it drew up when the wife's 32/20 was seperating cases. It's based on full length 357 Mag cases and a 32/40 type taper.

The throat would be my standard 30 cal neck and throat reamer of .120 long, .309 freebore with a 1 deg leade, forward of that.

I make my chambers in 3 steps, first the neck and throater goes in to the case length, then I do the tapered body, in this cae, .049 TPI. I then go in with a boring bar and cut the rim and headspace.

There is also a 30 Swartz (SP) out there, I believe it's based on the 357 Mag or Max but, I know nothing about it. I've just seen it in match equip. lists, a while back.

I thought that that was one of the issues with the 32-20 CPA was case life and separations. I would also be curious how many people seat the wad on there powder with no issues. I have been for a lot of years and have not seen an issue. Not saying I won't but have shot a lot of rounds and no problems. Seems like to me the pipe insulation wad would be a bigger issue then .1" floral foam that sometimes fragments while pushing it down.

bnice - I have been loading floral wads on top of my Unique power for over ten years..45/70 with 11.5 grs. of unique and 405 gr. cast bullet. This is very mild load. Also load 32/20 with 4.8 Unique and 115 gr. cast bullet which is also very mild load. Never had an issue with either. Very thin floral wad like you mentioned is very fragile. Lot of shooters at our buffalo shoots use the floral wads and also cork wads. My thinking is the occasional ringing of the barrel is caused by hot max loads. Wonder how the shotgun slugs get by with the over powder compressed wad ?? Wonder how many shooters on this forum ever had or seen a barrel ringed by using floral wads?

FWIW, ringing a barrel is not a 1-shot thing - it happens gradually, and - certainly with the modern barrel steels - takes quite a few shots.  But when you do notice it, it is too late...

Did he scrub his barrel to make sure that was not a carbon ring. That is similar to what I shot for loads. I'm not promoting it but was shown this method by folks who have shot this way longer then me and have shot that was since.

The ringing of the chamber is less about the wad and more about the shape of the charge. Charlie Dell proved that he could ring a chamber by putting in the powder settling it and firing the rifle in the vertical position with no wad at all. The powder has to slump when it is a solid plug that creates a solid pressure wave that, when it meets the bullet will push against the chamber wall until the bullet starts to move down the barrel.

When it comes to ringing a barrel, you can look at it this way: Basically the only way that you'll ever ring a barrel, is to put something inside the case. I know of no cases of chamber ringing from not using a wad or using a wad at the case mouth.

I'm one of the unfortunate ones that have rung a chamber! I did it back in about 1992, shooting my 30/40 Krag, HW. In my case, I was shooting BSed and it may have happened faster than a 32/40 or 32 Miller, because of the shouldered case. I say that because the ring happened about 1/10" back of the start of the shoulder, not at the bullet base.

It seemed to happen all at once, because it extracted fine on one shot and the next, it wouldn't extract. I knocked it out with a cleaning rod, thinking that it was just crude sticking it but, it would never extract again w/o using a cleaning rod.

I didn't use floral foam, I used Downy fabic softener foam sheets. It's a very open celled foam and is about 1/16" think and I cut them into 1/2" squares. Push them in, using the eraser end of a pencil.

I was using 18.0 gr of 296 and it happen within about 100 shots. I had chronographed the combination and got better ES and SD with it but, it cost me dearly. So, from then, until today, I never have and never will put ANYTHING inside the case.

In the end, it I was fortunate that it rang back of the shoulder, because about 2 months ago, I had a reamer made to make it into a 30/40 Imp and was again able to shoot it with great success.

BUT, I did learn my lesson.

It was not a carbon ring.

It was a 1/16" deep groove in the barrel at the base of the seated bullet.

You could snag a bent piece of wire on it.

Dave, Did it affect the shooting?

not to worry, it will take more than  one guy with a RKS 11.5:1 NON-FAMILY BARREL to challenge your team of ringers.  Cheesy

Care to fine tune my Pope to further even thing out?  Huh

Dave,

Ever since I tuned my Ballard and shot that 249 a couple of weeks ago, it has only been singing Celiné Dion and Michael Bublé songs!

I may have to re-barrel with an American made one  Smiley
