High Wall Book ??
Oct 21st, 2015 at 9:55pm
Print Post
I'm in the middle of building a High Wall from the plans in your archives (that's another story).
Crawling through some old posts on here, I've come across a couple of vague references to a "High Wall Book".
I've ordered Frank De Haas's book "Single Shot Rifles and Actions" (used copy from Ebay). Is there a book dedicated to just the Winchester "High Wall" ?  If so, I'd like to know where I might get a copy.
Thanks in advance.  Smiley

Might be referring to John Campbell's two volume set on the Winchester 1885's. Amazing where the prices have gone on Vol. I!!! I think I paid $30 when I got mine.

Thanks for the reply --- Wow !!
I think I'll have to do without Volume 1 for awhile. Undecided
Volume 2 might be do-able though. Smiley

Cuslog,
I believe volume 1 of Campbell's two volumes would be your better choice. I have both volumes and if I was building a copy of the 1885 I'd want that volume assuming I didn't have it already. There really are some excellent books on firearms but all tend to be of limited printing runs. Initially they are relatively cheap, but once the supply runs out then the prices rocket. Understandably they are never books that are going into the 'Best Sellers' lists and occasionally authors have to have their books printed privately and it may take a couple of decades to sell them all, so productions runs are not large. Books on some firearms can triple or quadruple in a very short time, once the initial stock is sold, and the prices don't seem to come down. If money is tight at present try your local lending library, if they don't have it in stock they may be able to obtain a copy you can borrow on inter library loan. Good luck.

I rarely even open Volume II. If I had looked at it prior to buying it, I probably wouldn't even buy Volume II. Volume I is fantastic.

I went for years lacking the second volume, having got the first back when it was new. I didn't think I needed the second one, fun though it may be. Finally a copy showed at a low price, and I picked it up. Like mentioned above, it's just lace around the edges of the first book. Pay the loot to get it, and you'll have ninety-odd percent of what you want to know about these lovely rifles. Let us see that project of yours, too.

I would think that vol 1 would still be in print .  this book was printed within the last 2 years and is sold out my mom wants a copy of it I bought it 2 time on ebay from sellers for $55 only to have it backordered the printer had it listed on their web site as backordered but the price is $55 +shipping . it may be like a lot of gun books the volume is so small that they only get one printing.  . Vol 1 was first printed about 20+ years ago.  Whether there is a more recent print run now or not, I can't say, but a limited run from 2 decades in the past can be expected to appreciate in value if the book is any good at all (and that one definitely is!)  When last I heard, John's interest had migrated to high grade double barrel shotguns, so I would be somewhat surprised if he were making the effort to organize another print run, but who knows????

Cuslog,

I tried to order volume I from C. Sharps about two months ago. Initially I got the same email you got, then received a follow-up email letting me know they were out of stock. If you are successful in purchasing a copy please let me know.

I called them this morning -- they have Vol. II in stock - which I ordered --  just to have "something" for more references.
Guy on the phone said they are "supposed to be" printing another run of Vol. I  "sometime" -- also said he's had them on back order for over a year. Sad

Cuslog,
One of the best places to locate books is on a website called:- (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links) This is an association of some 1500 booksellers world wide all of whom list their books on this site. Go to the site and type in the search box all the information you have and click search. You will get a list up showing good descriptions of the books condition, price, location, shipping etc. I've used it many times and seldom had a failure to locate. It costs nothing to join as a buyer. It's a win, win situation. You can even ask to be informed as soon as the books you want comes up for sale. Give it a go, it's free.
