Winchester barrel interchangeability

I have read in many places that the high and low wall barrels are interchangeable - threads, extractors, and cartridges allowing. I have tried this three times and none fit perfectly but all were "close". Does anyone have experience with the reality of doing this? How close can a barrel be expected to fit when moved from one non-modified receiver to another?

There are a couple of issues. One, some of the early Hiwalls 1St year production had the same thread size as the Lowalls, but there may be shoulder length issues. In the later Hiwalls with large threads the fit usually is quite good. But! they do not just screw up tight by hand and fit. The Winchester system tends to screw up neatly to about 1/8" away from final fit. At this point you have to have an action Wrench and Barrel vise to pull it up to correct position. When you get the Index lines lined up all comes in well. The extractor cut is in place and the sight stuff is on top and correctly vertical. You must be carefull when clamping a Hiwall receiver. They are not robust and can quite easily be squished into a parallelism and I can tell you it's a real pain to bring it back where it belongs. I have taken to shimming the receiver with tight fitting Gage Blocks for support. A breech block will not always do as they are not really a tight fit. When things are right a Breech block will literally drop into the receiver. I have been able to restore?? a number of Hiwalls to near original condition using all original Winchester parts purchased a shows and they have become fine Rifles and shoot really well. I've done two swaps. LW to HW and LW to LW and both timed up when torqued together w/o over torquing. They were both small thread frames, of course.

A couple of issues, from a different point of view.
First of all, Winchester used gages to time the barrels and the frame, so they were fairly interchangeable.
The problem that we have when swapping barrels is that we are no longer dealing with “virgin” parts, meaning that the barrels have been screwed into a frame, and the frame has had a barrel screw into it. When that happens metals on both pieces have been compressed and/or displaced.
This works great for the first time, but will get looser the more times a barrel is screwed in.

Just fyi
I believe this is the correct specs to start with.  As Mike said, Changes will occur over the decades. And its a letdown when a original barrel times past 12:00 on a original frame.

Winchester takedown extensions had a means of adjustment built in for wear for good reason, and takedown barrel assemblies were only supposed to be re-installed hand-tight.

BP, yes you are right on the Takedowns. This has caused me to reconsider wether Hiwall  barrels need to be made up to such a tight fit. I have built up a couple of Takedown Rifles and most times the fresh Barrel to Action either pulls together nicely or requires a slight adjustment of the Take up screw. The two I have done shoot quite accurately. As someone else here has pointed out, Winchester made Rifles to Gage and were consistant. I do believe that Winchester used "Thread Milling" to achieve their good barrel fit. Well those are my thoughts on the issue of Hiwall barrel interchanging. HTH,
