Anyone had a stainless barrel blued? If so, who made the barrel and what were your results? I understand it can be done and looks good, but I've not yet found anyone to do so. Thanks.

CPA is doing my stainless RKS barrel. I should have it back in a few weeks. I'll post some pictures when I get it.

I seen a stainless barrel done by them and It looked great to me. Its actually a Teflon coating that's baked on. From what I read its supposed to be very durable.

Baked on TFE is not really what I'm after unless there is nothing else. I'm checking with a few of the 'well known' bluing folks to see what they can do.

I owned one that had been blued, not coated.  It was not very durable, not sure why, it came off of the corners of the octagon very fast.  I bought the gun from someone else, so not sure who had done the work.

I've personally duracoated stainless barrel guns, that lasts very well and is a good coating.  It has to be sandblasted rough with aluminum oxide grit prior to the coating to make it stick, but once on, it wears well.

Thanks.............. have spoken with Jess at BB and he said there should be no problem bluing a Bartlein gain-twist barrel. Still waiting to hear back from Precision and Turnbull.

Years ago I had a roller that came with a stainless barrel I was told that the only was to blue it was the teflon,NOT TRUE, so I had it done. Bottom line save your self a lot of money and get a can of dimi-gloss black at the hobby store and paint it your self. It will look the same and you'll save a bunch of money. True bluing can be done the finish has to be etched first and its a PIA job for most smiths.

2nd what 40 Rod said.
Producing the etch is a PITA.
Srong acid is used to etch the surface of stainless before bluing, and you need a good quantity of acid to cover your barrel in a spare tank. Needless to say, etching should be done outside in the open air because of the fumes that are produced (even with good ventilation, messing with large quantities of acid indoors is not healthy for you or any ferrous equipment or firearms and parts nearby.
Bluing will come off a barrel easily if the acid has become weak and/or hasn't been given enough time to produce a decent etching.

Just an opinion, but baked on coatings make me think of black plastic guns.

Neither Precisin or Turnbull will work on stainless anything.

I just can't resist rocking the boat. Smiley

It would seems that using a SS liner in a steel barrel might give you the best of
both worlds.
