32-40 , IMR 4227 max. powder charge

I'am currently shooting a CPA with a .319 Douglas barrel with a 1:15 twist rate . Casting the Hoch 200-205 gr. bullet behind 14.2 grs. of IMR 4227 powder. Averages on the chrono about 1380 fps . I did try some loads at 14.9grs. with the new Saeco bullet . Was wondering if anyone goes beyond 15.0 grs and any leading noted ? The reason I'am asking is with my new Saeco bullet I'am getting some tipping and some very minor key holes . Today with the 14.9 grs. it got a little better . There is no tipping or key holes with the Hoch mould and I really want to give the Saeco mould a chance .Thanks

If it tips add powder.  I run mine over 15 grs if needed. Lot depends on the ambient temperature and how far the target is actually set.

Most ranges are not measured precisely some are longer than 200 yards. My home club is actually quite a bit more than 200 yards, Target frames behind and just above the 200 meter Silhouette berm. Probably 225 yards were the bullet is transitioning from super to sub sonic. That range I bump the charge up.

CPA Action is plenty strong back off when you see flat primers or leading. Leading can be managed to some degree with the bullets temper and size, you are committed to size but can tweak the Lead/Tin ratio.

Never pushed mine as far as it will go but it's certainly more than 15 grs of 4227 Never saw any lead with that charge and 1/25 mix

Thanks for the advice boats. The Hoch mould bullet does not tip , perfect round holes 14.2 grs. At first with 13.8 grs the Hoch bullet did tip, however the tipping was always at exactly 6:00 O-Clock ! The new Saeco bullet which is a little shorter and also has  a larger diameter front nose than the Hoch bullet . I may be wrong in calling them key holes, however the tipping is not always at 6:oo O-Clock. Can be at 3:00 O-Clock or anywhere. I get round holes but they always have that little tear on one side of the holes. I will post come pics next time of the Saeco bullet . And I always shoot at our 200 yard range . Thanks again .

My favorite charge of 4227, is 14.8 gr. It's shot some excellent scores with a Douglas, 16 twist and a RL 1.11 long bullet (1.281 ave for 5, five shot groups @ 200) but, I've played with 16.1 - 16.5 gr, with a 1.17 long, 207 gr PJ bullet, in my equally accurate, 15 twist, Douglas (.321) barrel.

Using Smiley (Javelina Schuetzen) lube, I got no leading and in a chrono test, I got about a 7/8 10 shot group at 100, in Modesto.

I rarely shoot 32/40 any more and that test was done, 3 years ago, the test was done more to get the BC of the bullet, rather than accuracy (in other words, I shot as fast as I could and did not watch the wind).

There where no signs of pressure and I used pistol primers.

I went back and looked it up. The group size was actually .700 for ten shots and this is the chrono results.

32 caliber plain base at about 1450 is a standard performer. Tweak it to suit your individual bullet and barrel.  Franks comment on Pistol primers is a good one if getting speed is causing them to go flat, go to rifle primers.

I just looked at my notes for this, and I've been to 15.1 gr. of 4227, but the note also says don't do it again. I don't recall what made me write that one. I don't recall any high pressure, so maybe it was just inaccurate or leading. Can't say. Need better notes sometimes.
