can you buy a good liner in 12twist for the 32/40, the info I have for TJ's does not list a 12 twist. Ledball

It looks like 14" is the tightest twist they offer. Unfortunately, the twist calculator is giving 1857fps as the MV needed for the 1.11" long 200gr bullet I would like to shoot.

BTW - where did you find on-line info for TJs? I've not been able to find anything.

Your twist calculator is wrong. I shoot a 217g 1.25" bullet in a 14 twist Shilen at 1540fps and it shoots very well.

I resently posted this in another thread but, since the bullet in question is 1.11 long. This was my result for a 26", 16 twist, Douglas barrled, 32/40 HW, shooting 14.8 gr 4227. My bullet was a RL, 197 gr spitzer, 1,11 long.

The small group of the 5 was .862, not bad for the 90's.

That's some pretty nice shooting Frank!

I'd also say that the calculator is wrong.  I just verified that the twist is 1:14 on my rifle.  It will not tip my 200gr bullets with proper charges of smokeless, although it will a little with BP.  That was my reason for suggesting trying a little more twist as I suspect that Glenn might want to shoot black powder.

We have a shooter at Etna Green that shoots a 233 gn Jones bullet with a 14 twist, he has won the benchrest championship with this bullet and twist, go figure.  Ledball

I am so happy that my rifles can't read all of this stuff. While I like knowing things, I can't bring myself to sweat out stuff like the barometric pressure's effect on my bullet stability. A very nice thing about using a strong action and a somewhat larger case is that I can add (or subtract) powder to make a bullet that tips go away. I can't change the weather, but I can freely up the charge. Carry on gentlemen..............................

Calledflyer, I agree, all these numbers make my head hurt, I'm going to let the 25 ring tell me what I need to do.  Ledball

Including changing your barrel's twist? Did not realize it was that easy. Wink Probably best to start with something that should work, based on historical evidence, then just guess.
Thanks to all for your feedback.

I shoot a 196 gr. bullet in a 16 twist barrel all the time. I doesn't shoot too bad, either. Sometimes, with a light charge of 4759 it just shows some slightly out of round holes. But, with 14 or so grains of 4227 that bullet, and all others I shoot make good holes. Sometimes, they aren't where I want 'em- but that's not the bullet stability- it's me. That heavy bullet isn't a spitzer, by the way, it's flat nosed, and measures .980. I think that going all the way to a 12 twist is unneccesary in this caliber unless one intends to shoot a pretty high velocity.

I much prefer the right hand twist. Get all messed up when trying to compensate for a left hand twist. Right is what I'm used too since most twists are RH.

I have one LH twist rifle. It's a 14 twist, 32/35, Bo Clerke barrel and it does feel entirely different.

Feel different?

I'm talking about where the bullet hits the target in windy conditions.

Joe,
What I'm talking about is, after shooting ALL RH twist rifles (all my others are RH) it "feels" different when it torques the "wrong" way.

As far as target compensation, if it shoots left, I hold right. As far as ajusting the scope goes, I don't shoot it enough to remember cranking the turrets a different way. I just pull the trigger and move the scope towards the hole in the paper.

Have a left-hand twist and like it. Torques into your body and keeps the jag tight when wiping. H. Pope used LH twist for most of his rifles from what I read.
