Stevens 44 Front sight Needed!
Sep 9th, 2015 at 12:44pm
Print Post
Current sight is broken - it has a flip up semi hood that rotates the post in one position, and, and pivots to change the post. I'm not sure if it is correct and since the "bale" that rotates is broken, I either need the bale of the complete sight. If not the correct period sight, I'd rather install the one that belongs on it.

I need some advise please

What you have is a Beach combination front sight.

You can get a reproduction of this from MVA  ( (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)).

Depending on which model 44 Stevens you have, their #119/120 globe sight might also be an appropriate replacement.

What model and caliber Stevens do you have?

And maybe somone here has an original for sale.

Was the Beach sight original equipment on the 44s?

The Beach sight was optional on many guns of that era, including Stevens. Many actually listed it in the parts section of their catalogs.
I had a similar Beach sight repaired by a talented welder. I found some steel tube, and cut a ring off the tubing. Then sliced a section out, and he TIG welded the ring to the sight. I filed it smooth, and cold blued it. Saved a fairly desirable sight, and for less than a replacement cost.

The one I have pivots on a screw, so the two sight types can be used. I thank you, but I'll look further for an original.

Unfortunately Buffalo has been out of these sights for a while.

As far as I can tell, MVA is the sole source for repros.

I'd be happy to be informed otherwise.

Yes, all of this type of combination sight pivot on screws. The repair would not affect that feature. It's simply welded in place of the broken hood ring. But if you decide not to fix it, let me know! I'd be happy to do so, and have a repaired Beach sight.

One other mention. I believe your Stevens front sight is possibly not a standard 3/8" dovetail! If it's a wider 7/16", your front sight options are very small!

The sight on MJT's rifle looks like the remnants of a Lyman No. 5B sight (early version with the vertical ivory post open bead that was later replaced by the open bead having the No. 3 bead profile), with the base that fits the larger Stevens front dovetail. The Lyman 5 series (as well as the No. 8 Windgauge Sporting Sight) used two opposing screws to hold the globe into the base. One screw was slightly staked to keep it in a fixed position, and the other was tightened as required to provide tension to prevent the globe from flopping back and forth.

The original Stevens Beach Combination Front Sight's that I've encountered (as well as some made by other early  manufacturers) used pins instead of screws for the globe pivots, and some versions had a small leaf sping recessed between the globe and the base that provided tension to the globe.

Schuetzendave,
Are you a lefty?
Reason I ask is the spring lock used to turn the windage screw on your No. 8 is usually positioned to starboard instead of to port as you have your sight installed.    Smiley
