Stevens 161 scope

Print Post
Picked up this neat old Stevens scope earlier this month, and just received it from the seller on Friday. The little #3 Ballard is marked under the forearm, "Re-bored by J. Stevens A&T" and ".25 Stevens RF" in Stevens script.
Figured it was the perfect gun for the Stevens 161 scope to go on! Have about 8 boxes of .25 Stevens RF, and occasionally splurge and take the little #3 Ballard for a spin!

Sweet setup. The scope would sure look good on one of my Stevens.

What looks to be a fairly nice Stevens scope on gunbroker:

Not as long as this one, but if you want Stevens original glass...

Yes, I saw that one on GB. I doubt it will sell at that starting price. Old scopes are sold by the inch I think! The longer they are, the more valuable they are! I have several of the shorter 19"-22" Stevens scopes, and even in pretty nice shape they don't go near that seller's asking price.
I have a first year Unertl on my Schoyen Ballard. Very interesting old Unertl, as back then he didn't build mounts for his copes. He purchased them from Lyman or other makers. The scope I have uses Lyman mounts, and doesn't have the typical later Unertl rollstamp, with serial number. It's simply stamped "UNERTL" in block letters on the bottom side, and no other markings. Small straight tube, and no bell to the objective end. Beautiful optics for a very old scope!

What's an appropriate price/inch for old Stevens scopes?

And as long as your posting pics, that's one Unertl I'd like to see a pic of.

Marlinguy, I think you hit the nail on the head; by the inch  Cheesy.  It would make a good scope for my Stevens-Pope Ballard, but not that good Smiley  The Lyman that came on it is good enuf  Wink

Many of the old straight tube scopes in the common variety (and shorter length) sell around $300-$400, with standard mounts. When I refer to common, I mean the old scopes that are most often found for sale. The really rare varieties will bring a lot more, and the longer than 22" will also bring a lot more. Full length scopes in the 26"-32" lengths often bring prices in the $1500 or higher range! The longer scopes bring the highest prices.
Then there are mounts. Find an old Malcolm or Mogg scope, and it's very big money, but is they have the old vernier style mounts, the price is dramatically higher!
There are also a number of scopes built by individuals who made very few, and are very good quality! Those are tough to price, since not enough are found to set the values.

This is the Unertl scope. I was wrong on the marking, as it actually reads, "JUNERTL" not UNERTL. It is an 18" tube, and appears to be browned, not blued. The lock ring has a "6" on it, which I assume is the magnification. Many old scopes were 3x or 4x, so the Unertl is a nicer magnification.

Vall,

Your Ballard with the Stevens scope just looks Right and Proper!     Smiley

Thanks BP! I wanted to put it on my #3f Fine Gallery, but someone opened up the front dovetail for a 7/16 windage globe front sight! I'd like that globe on my Rem. #1 Sporter, as it's 7/16" front dovetail, but not sure if a 1/16" filler would work on the little #3f to make this scope fit?

Vall,
Didn't the early Stevens No 1 front mount (for the Stevens 44) fit a 7/16" dovetail?
I'd be leary of a 1/16" spacer in a dovetail... have seen one that tried to rotate up out of the dovetail. Don't want potential damage to a barrel dovetail or the scope and mount if things loosened up.
Might see if Steve Earle has any low-height small profile 7/16" dovetail to 3/8" adapter blocks, if raising the scope slightly isn't objectionable.

Yes, I'm also leary, and raising the scope isn't going to work, unless it was raised on both ends. I suppose a 3/8" raised block for the rear could be used with a 7/16" raised adapter for the front.
