It's for cowboy shooting. It's garbage. Don't waste your time.
I apologize in advance to the people I have offended.

I been to a couple of those CA shoots. Really enjoy the women dressed up in those big fancy dresses. The perfume and swishing really gets to me. A little cleavage is swell too.  Getting side swiped by one of those gals really makes my day. Somebody hold me back!   Roll Eyes

Oops, looks like I'm outa time here.

I cannot speak to the accuracy of trailboss but it does have two advantages against most powders.

1)Soft shooting.  It is designed for low velocity cowboy lead bullets so it doesn't have a ton of recoil.  I have loaded it in 45/70 and it is indeed a pussycat.

2)Just about impossible to overload it.  As long as you don't compress it, I don't think you can overload it.  If it fits in the case, you can shoot it.

These are both fine attributes in a powder to be sure, but I have not heard tales of incredible accuracy, only acceptable accuracy.  Rightly or wrongly I think of it as the smokeless equivalent of BP.

I was loading some 38-55 BP today so I decided to weigh a full case of Trail Boss.  Just about 16gr to the top of the case.

Looking for some loads for my new .327 Federal Magnum Ruger#3.  Opinions on Trail Boss.  Using a 170 gr. cast bullet, breech seated.

Never mind the mule. Just load the wagon.

There you go, George. Fill to the base of the bullet and reduce by 1/3 as a starting point. Work up from there.

66 percent, 1/3, 3/4?  Must be a forgiving powder. Not from the numbers I see posted here. Very high pressures for low velocity. Very very light and fluffy for sure.

Hodgdon's Trail Boss load data says 70%.  The problem with finding load data for my .327 Fed. Mag. is pistol data with a 115 gr. cast bullet is the heaviest load I've found.  I am thinking about using load data for the .32-20 WCF.

Recently bought a Winchester Model 71 Reproduction (Browning)in 348 Winchester.
Tried the 70% Trail Boss rule and locked the rifle up solid! Thought might have had an overload so extremely carefully loaded another round with the same results. Huge pressure issues. Used other, slower powders at much higher velocity with zero issues. We are still not sure what happened.
Maybe TB doesn't like a  bottle neck case?
When I look at pressure curves of TB I'm always concerned about how fast the pressure spikes....not the amount of pressure.

I believe that stuff and the fill grade indication will work untill you get to the bigger cases.  If someone would try to make a load with the stuff for a .577 NE or similar large-case double, the rifle will most likely blow up.
Don't forget this is essentially a bulky pistol powder.

Here is some load data from IMR.

Good luck getting it to shoot well.  I have half of a can left from several years ago.  The best thing about it is that the rifle will be very quiet Smiley.  I've had quite decent accuracy at 100, but by 200 there was an enormous amount of vertical dispersion.  Worse than any powder I've ever used.

It is also the worst , most unrewararding powder I have ever tried , but I am going to try again in 45-70  and 38-55 , and heres why , I may have stopped at too low of a dose. It was always very docile in kick and noise , and the SASS shooters only were extolling its virtues , not needing accuracy.
The accuracy shooters , myself included were discgusted and perhaps gave up too early , being paranoid of the high pressure spikes ,(possibly rightly so in the case of old weak Ballards and the Like) that I now believe I was far away from spikes and that the powder is probably load sensitive , needing a bare minimum dose to show accuracy. I certainly never encountered any pressure signs.
The perfect vehicle to test better strength loads ( within the non compressing maximum deadlines ) may be a strong modern Mirouku Single Shot. I would love to tame my 45-70 BPCR, being an excellent rifle other than the excessive recoil , even with mild 4198 loads
