Stubb, you may want to call Russ and confirm the requirements he told me for the breech seater:
* Send him 3 cast bullets for the largest size diameters you intend to breech shoot - which could be several diameters if you buy different molds.  I sent him 3 bullets that were .319 to .324
* Send him 3 pieces of brass irregardless whether they have been fireformed to a specific bullet
*  For all 3 cases, he will ream them to the largest diameter bullet that you sent him or you tell him.  The cases do not have to be fire formed unless you only plan to shoot that one bullet ... a bet says you'll buy more than one 32-40 mold Grin

I would go large on the bullet diameter size.  A 32-40 bullet has a nominal size of .320 but depending on different molds and casting alloy ... they will be larger than the .320 nominal size

Bore is .322" according to the slug. I was told 3 empty cases that had been fire formed, and the largest diameter of bullet...

I received the mould today, and will attempt a cast tomorrow to make a few bullets and measure them.

If your groove is .322 you will probably need a bullet some where between .323 and .324 so I would have Russ ream the seater case to .325. If you are not geared for it enlarging the inside case diameter can be a real Pitta.! If this does not sound agreeable to you I would at least have him ream one of the three replacement cases to that size based on my experiance.

Thanks J Louis. I will make that suggestion.

Regards,
Stubb

ETA casted a few bullets. Took awhile to get the mould to throw good bullets. Largest base driving band measured at 324" I may not have held the mould fully closed for that one. Most cast at 323"  I now wonder if I shouldn't get a sizing die at 323"

For my 32-40 loads I use 1/8" thick Cork wads at the mouth of the case. I use 4759 which is a bulky powder so have no need for over the powder loads in 32-40. If you adopt this method it is customary to NOT put the wad right down on the powder but about 1/8" off the powder. Depends on your success through experiment. If you do this have some Machinist you know make you a plug that fits the case and has a shoulder that fetches up at the mouth of the shell so your wads are located consistently. When I do use an over powder wad by the way I use 1/16" Cork. They are fragile and many times are destroyed, I do use over powder wads in my 38-55 loads and these are seated as described and are also 1/16" thick. Now all this in my part is for Offhand shooting. If you are a Bench Rest enthusiast you may want to work around these methods. Wads right down hard on the Powder is OK with full case loads of Black powder but Smokeless should be approached carefully. There have been instances of RUNG chambers from stiff loads of fast burning Smokeless Powders with a Wad right down solid on the Powder charge. HTH Regards, FITZ Smiley

Don't use a wad, introduces another variable and one that's hard to control consistently. However the topic is controversial and would not argue against the wad guys.

Many ranges including my club range have a no muzzle over the berm rule. It's a good one A/D over the berm is going to fly a very long way. Old High Power mount, raise the muzzle sky high then screw down into position is a habit hard to break, but unnecessary for good shooting.

Shooting offhand I rest my rifle muzzle down on a sand bag sitting on the waist high rail. Insert the cartridge, raise to level then fire.  When I used to breech seat did the same thing except rested the rifle on a standing rest, level, inserted the charged case (no wad) then raised a few inches to clear the rest and fire.

No negative to low, then up, or no wad, as long as every thing is consistent.  Short case shooters have to use a wad 32/40's don't need them.  I did  use a wad when I breech seated Black Powder and used Fitz's method with a wad setting tool to set it consistent

Thanks fellas. The whole ringed chamber experience is one I would as soon not have. Unless I'm missing the point, sounds like I would do better to not use a wad, or if I do, a thin cork wad at the case mouth only, just to avoid a spillage of powder.

So much to learn.

Oh. I nearly forgot. On the bottom of the barrel under the hand guard it says .3225 and 1 in 15 twist.  Also bears a maker's name, though I don't remember it just now, I did see another topic on here with some information about him.

I would not get a sizing die if your Groove is .3225 and the bullet casts at .323 a 1/2 a thou. larger you are on the borderline of getting a positive seal and possible leading could be the result. From exsperiance you would probably be better served with a .324-.325 dia. bullet. Hopefully this is not the case and the bullet you have will work for you. As cast bullets of the proper dia. shot in the order as cast typicaly produce better accuracy than a sized a bullet or those segregated by weight if one can consistently cast bullets within 4 tenths of each other.

You have received a bunch of advice, all seemingly based on our individual experiences and all valid for our own circumstances. There has been so much advice, I'm sure it's confusing (it's confusing to me and I have been shooting this game for years).
You have a bullet that fits your rifle, a half a thou over groove will seal the bore. Select the advice of those who's loading methods make sense to you and go shooting. After a few shooting sessions, it will shake out for you what's working and what's not. The targets will tell the story and you can then make adjustments to your loading process to improve accuracy.
Good shooting!

There are indeed two Americas. Simply put, it is not the haves and have nots. The two Americans are in reality divided into those who do and those who don't.

Well put Randy and the best advice so far and forgive me if I was creating confusion that was not my intent. It really is a very simple process brought about by time spent at the range to figure out what an individuals rifle does and does not like as there are truly no two whos favorite diet is exactly the same.

Again thanks guys. I'll try to stop asking so many questions, and it will be awhile before I can shoot the old girl as her fore end is at the gunsmith's having a palm rest installed.

Thank you and please continue to ask any questions that might arise at will it is how one learns. I apologize again for answering a question that was not asked addressing a problem that currently did not exist.

Tapered bullet advantages/disadvantages

Didn't want to start a new topic, as I fear I may be taking up too much band width. I just measured one of my bullets, and the driving bands become progressively larger as I measure them nearer the bullet base. Also, the base band varies from 324 to just over 322 at one small spot. Per legend engraved/roll marked on barrel, barrel diameter is .3225

I thought this Saeco mould was a straight shank, as someone told me it was, but in fact it does have a bit of taper built in.

Questions:
1) Is there some sort of advantage to be gained by a tapered bullet?

2) In at least one small area of the base band the bullet is under bore diameter by ~.0005" I wonder do you suppose the alloy will smoosh out enough in seating that the undersized area will seal the bore ok? Or is it anything to even worry about.

-- I intend to shoot it and see of course. It may be just fine in any event, but thought I'd ask anyways.
