What is the purpose of Rigby barrel flats?

It appears to me, Rigby barrel flats are a decorative fad that died out years ago, or do they actually serve some other function?

Regards,

Cause they are gnarly...... Wink....now isn't that an interesting use of a stupid term?
They look nice and to go further on the discussion would be just speculation. Oh yes a crescent wrench fits over them...NOT...just kidding

I believe that Rigby Flats were a traditional holdover from some earlier gun, but that's just a guess.....

How about this?
From the website of the North Territory Arms Collector's Association (Australia) (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

NOCK'S FORM
Often erroneously referred to as a ‘Knox Form’, this flat section on the barrel adjacent to the receiver ring on many bolt-action rifles is designed to permit the proper seating of the barrel-wrench during fitting or removal of the barrel. It performs the secondary function of a reference plane for correctly setting the iron sights. The Nock's Form is believed to be an invention of the Nock family of 18th and 19th Century London gun-makers, whose name the feature bears to this day.

From some of the older rifles that I have seen, the Rigby Flat was evidently machined to allow the pipe wrench more purchase on the barrel....

Having to use a round barrel pipe wrench like plumbers use can leave really nasty wrench marks.   Cry

Kurt, even if that rifle had pipe wrench marks on the Rigby flats it'd be spectacular, wouldn't it? Outta my league for sure.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

Saw a double set trigger Rigby at our show this last weekend. Didn't own enough decent guns to trade into it! Seller was wanting Winchesters, and with only one High Wall, and one Low Wall, I was a bit short!

What I've read, somewhere, is that the side flats were there to seat on the stock for stability. Originally used on muzzle loading rifles, and were carried over to cartridge rifles.

Seem kinda small to do much good.
