Stevens 44 extractor too long

I have a Stevens 44 rifle that kids dry, fired with nothing in it and beat the extractor to pieces. I bought a new extractor a few years ago from Wisners and have only recently taken the rifle down and try to install this extractor. it can only go in there one way and when it is installed it sticks up about an eighth of an inch too far. so I have tried to round file the hole where the main bolt goes through to hold it so that it will fall down farther onto that bolt of course it makes the part loose it still does close up and I'm not all the way there but now actually the outside of the part is contacting the slot that is machined for has anyone had this problem. any help with this would be greatly appreciated I really do want to shoot the old gun. .Thunderboy

Don't alter the extractor pivot hole. Doing so can allow the extractor to tilt and cause it to hang up on the side of the extractor slot.
The extractor tip was made over-long so you could fit it to match your particular caliber.
A bit of Dykem brushed on the back side of the extractor tip, and then marked with a small U-shaped scribe along the bottom edge of the chamber will get you close to finished length for trimming off the excess material.
Then use a milling cutter to cut the rim clearance, and debur.

Double Dittos to what BP wrote.   Sadly that extractor is now scrap, and you'll have to buy another one.

I recently had a similar situation with a low wall and blank extractor.  To mark where to cut away excess material, I turned a plug to chamber dimensions that extended to the rear of the chamber about 1/2 inch.  I then cut a notch in the plug to clear the oversize extractor.  The rifle was assembled with the plug in the chamber and the extractor was scribed using the notched plug as a guide.  This scribed line was for the cartridge body and the cut for the rim was added by indexing off the cartridge body cut.
