Stevens Lady's Model & a Question
Aug 10th, 2015 at 2:37pm
Print Post
Picked up the little lady's rifle pictured below last week.  In .25-21 Stevens, it's been completely refurbished with new wood, a relined barrel, re-case colored, and re-blued.  Given the clarity of the stamp on the barrel, they must have started with an almost new rifle.

Lyman 103 tang sight, two leaf rear, and a Beach's combination front sight.

Question: is this an "Oh" 44 1/2 or a "Zero" 44 1/2?  Grant's book has it both ways, and I'm curious as to which is proper.

As named by Stevens, the No. 044 1/2 was called the "ENGLISH" model.
It was not called the "Oh" 44 1/2 or "Zero" 44 1/2 by Stevens, just as the model 1885 was not called the hiwall or lowwall by WRA.

The Stevens "LADIES" model is a No. 56, and if you pull the fore-end, you should see 56 stamped into the front of the frame.

Nice refinish on a nice rifle!

Oh, I was under the impresion that all of the small actions were 044 1/2 rifles.

I'll go pull the forend and see what's there.

Thanks!

Smoke,

The 044 1/2 was the same size in profile (side view) as the 44 1/2, but the 044 1/2 frame was made narrower, making it lighter in weight than the 44 1/2.

The "ENGLISH" model 044 1/2 was the basic narrow frame version that came with a single trigger, straight grip and Stagshead shotgun butt plate.

The "LADIES" model 56 was an up-graded version of the "ENGLISH" model 044 1/2, gussied up with extra goodies.

Well, the front of the receiver says "0 44 1/2 0" and "EX" and the gun has double set triggers and a small swiss butt.  Is this is an English model or a Lady's Model (or some conglomeration of the two)?

Well, Smoke, to my way of thinking, someone took a 044 1/2 and obtained the other parts and wood needed to make it all look like a "LADIES" model 56. The stamping on the front of the frame (and a couple other details) pretty much tells the story.

If you're not into it too high, and bought it to be used as a really nice shooter, then hopefully you can enjoy it as such.
If you bought it as a colletor item, then...
But you'll have to decide on that for yourself.

I bought it as a shooter.  The seller represented it as NOT a 56, but as a completely rebuilt 044 1/2.

I have a grandaughter that I'm going to lure into schuetzen with it.

Thanks for the clarification!

Having collected Stevens Lady models for more than 50 years, I can assure you that Stevens was "typically" unpredictable with marking them. This first marking is model 56 SN 2606.

This one is SN 3420.

Nope.  The seller had no idea who did the work.

Too bad.  I've got a .32-40 44 1/2 I'd love to have the guy color.

I would like to find out who CPA sends their actions to for the Stevens style coloring.
