Fire Forming 38-50 Cases
Jul 27th, 2015 at 5:22pm
Print Post
Will be fire-forming a bunch of 30-40 Gov't cases to 38-50. Am wondering how far down one should anneal the cases prior to fire-forming? All the way to the shoulder?
Will be using ~8gr of Unique with the balance being CoW and a drop of Elmer's Glue to keep everything in place.
Thanks.

If I was using .30 krag cases (or any bottleneck case) I'd anneal down through the shoulder, so it would blow out easier, and not lose any from splitting. Considering the difference in case length, you wont quite get it fully fire formed, as the extra @ .3" longer case will form to the bore size. Hopefully your dies will take it the rest the way to expand to full neck size after trimming.

Will trim all cases back about 0.200" before fire-forming and then FL size and retrim to the correct length afterwards.

I just fire formed 200 38-50 from 30/40. Do not use any wad, I don't know about glue, I used 10 grains  unique then filled with cream wheat hold everything straight up and shoot, no splits and formed perfect. Cases started at 2.3 long and formed to 2.75 then I trimmed them .010 longer than chamber and annealed them and shot BP loads them trimmed them to length. I tried a wad on top and every other one split tried annealing first again split city.My chamber is 2.220

2.220" seems like a fairly long chamber for a .38-50 Ballard. My .38-55 is only 2.12" long chamber.

Maybe the chamber is for a Remington 38-50 Hepburn. My 38-50 Hepburn chamber was (back in my BPCR Silhouette days) 2.240. This was a Dan T. designed chamber for use with Remington 30-40 cases.

Like Jerry's, mine is a 38-50 Rem with a DanT designed chamber. Is in an original Hepburn action.

I've formed several hundred Rem 30-40 cases for my 38-50 with no annealing and had no problems with the brass. I used 9gr of Bullseye with cases filled with Cream of Wheat.

Back in the day when I was shooting IMHSA I used a 7TCU....We would buy inexpensive 223 ammo and simply shoot it through the 7mmTCU barrel. Would fireform beautifully!

I would imagine shooting 30-30 through a 38-55 would accomplish the same thing. Saves time and money as no forming die is needed and you fireform the case to your chamber in one fell swoop!

Steve Rhoades at the Arizona Sharpshooter website makes an expander specifically for the .38-50 from .30-40 Krag case.
You can contact him at bpsteve@cox.net

I have fire-formed several hundred 38-50 cases from 30-40 Krag cases.  I have never annealed cases prior to fire forming and I have had zero case splits.  My fire forming load is 13 grains of bullseye and fill case with corn meal and install a wax plug.  They come out a little long but I just trim them before loading and everything is good to go.

Dan borrowed 3 fired 38-50 cases from me and my FL sizing die and used these to design his 38-50 reamer.    Both of the 38-50's I have now were chambered using his reamer as my first 38-50 had a 15" twist and was not very accurate past the turkey line.  The two I have now are a 12" and a 10" twist.  This is one of my favorite calibers.  Both rifles are on original Hepburn actions.
