Today was a mystery and misery

Pranced back out to the range with my box full of 12.6 enforcer, same array of primers and bullets that shot so well last week.  Today they would not group for turkey poop.   Cry  Took the chron this time, and to my surprise they were clocking out in the mid 1500s Shocked.  Way too fast I think.  Of course I left my Emeasure and powders at home so after about 60 rounds of 5-shot frustrations I slunk back home.  No leading, no chamber fouling.  Yes, the scope mounts were tight,  Will head out again this week with an array of AA9, 4227, and the Enforcer gain to see if I can get ahold of this cartridge again.  You all warned me this would happen...

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

Maybe the weather change did something to your groups?

Sometimes I get a 'magical' load one day and can't get it back the next time, too. When that happens I have to admit I was shooting very well the first day, and that the load was only part of it. Anxiety works on me. If I come back again a third time, sometimes things get good again, and sometimes I learn the truth about the load. Let those things sit inside the range box until you think your head is on straight and try 'em again. Oh, yeah, I find it helps to write everything down. Load, weather, wind, my impression of how I'm doing and an assessment of the load's potential. Sure is fun experimenting, ain't it? Keep us posted we like hearing of your venture. That chrono speed is a little fast seeming to me, but who really knows but your own rifle?

My first day of testing was very warm and I did not have the chrono with me.  Disaster Day was 10 degrees cooler, so to my mind the loads would have been hotter the first day.  I use test targets to document each group with its loading data, so I have a record of group, bullet, weight, powder charge and weight, primer , velocity and any other data for the day.

Heading out tomorrow with my measure, powders, primers and everything else (we have a reloading room back of the rifle range) to retest.  I did clean the bore to bare metal and checked all screws and the like.

Well, at least you know the accuracy is in there somewhere- it'll keep you tinkering with it. Don't forget that first load, though, even if you had one poor day with it. Happens to me all the time. I am quibbling with one of my favorite rifles these days trying to find a new, improved load for it after shooting it with the same ol' things for many years. Just the project to try different stuff is refreshing- even if it flunks sometime. Keep us in the loop.

Very slight wind currents WILL make a difference, even if you can not see them.
Amazing how far a no wind condition will change POI, up, down or sideways.

Helps to have wind flags out when testing.

Wednesday at the range started out at 60 and stabilized at 70 degrees.  Puffy little breezes from the SW came and went.  We have wind flags at the south end of our 20-bench covered range at at 40 yards out front as well as at 100 where all my shooting was done.  I paid particular attention to the 40-yarder.
I concentrated on AA9 due to the match coming up tomorrow.  Started with 3-round strings at 9.3 and laddered up in .3 increments.  At 10.5 three plopped into one ragged hole.  I then went up to 10.8 and they scattered, then bracketed with 10.4 and 10.6.  The rifle and Hoch 205/210 gr were happy at 10.5gr, velocity of 1313-1332 fps.
Then ran 8 consecutive 5-round strings experimenting with forearm and butt placement on the rest and rear bag.  Got vertical stringing with the foreend too far back, settled with it 2" forward of the rest, buttplate even with the rear bunnyears, and free recoil.  The best 5-round groups centered around .5".
The match is a traditional CBA 5-bull dot target at 100 and 200 yards, 4 "dot" targets for a max of 50 points each distance.  A hit taking out the dot at 200 yards yields a $5 refund (max 2).  Saturday's the day!

Well, it looks to me as if you may be getting a refund at that match! For what it's worth, don't forget to eyeball that flag right at the shooting line.

No refund for moi....it was windy for the 200 yard relays and close, but no cigars.  I'm still learning to read the wind and mirage so the rifle cannot be blamed.  Next month!!
