Who shoots rifles using obsolete cartridges regularly? new or original.

I shoot what I call a 42 Wesson altho it isn't quite like the original because I couldn't find a parent case that would work.

please define obsolete cartridges, in your context?

Between the guys shooting Schuetzen-style target (100 and 200 yards), the BPCR and Long ranges shooters and the hunters, lots of us shoot cartridges that are no longer available as factory loaded ammunition.

Some shoot vintage variations on "factory" ammunition  ( i.e.   the .33-40)

those of us who shoot original european single shots frequently find that the original factory cartridges are no longer available.

42 Wesson? That is a wildcat cartridge?

Most of the single shots I shoot use obsolete ammunition.

Two of them are chambered .32 Krag straight. Wildcat. I'm a wildcatter!

I was just thinking of any of the not so common ones like the Wesson cartridges, Ballards, Maynards Peabodys etc.

No It was a factory round for the Frank Wesson Rifle.
Mines Kinda a wildcat cause I used the 45-90 case instead of a base like the 444 marlin. Mine is just a necked up 40-82. or necked down 45-90.

I'd never heard of a 42 Wesson. Is not listed in cartridges Of The World.

Sooo.........?

I occasionally shoot a .43 Wesson in an original tip up Creedmore. It is a straight case of about 85 grains capacity and .437 groove diameter. As for Bullet I simply us the Ideal 43 Spanish.

How about a 42 Russian?  The case is 2.26" and is in the Cartridge Conversions Table

Anyway, my obsoletes are
* 25 Stevens reformed from Hornets in a Favorite
* Stevens 25-21 in a CPA
*  9.5x47R, designed in 1880 and lasted 10 years - in a Schuetzen rifle
* Have Steyer Martini Henry in 557/450 but at $8.75 per case ... the rifle is a safe queen

coincidently, looking thru the Cartridges for Collectors book I see the 10.3 X 65R Baenzinger  is a dead ringer for the 42 wesson and Brass is available thru Huntingtons. And Pacific has the Reamer

I now know what I'm going to chamber my WicKliffe rifle to Smiley

The .43 is extremely close to the 444 Marlin only a 2.6" case. Now I use 40-90 basic and modify the base just a tad.
