All of mine say 9.3x74, but I didn't make 'em. Came with the rifle. Probably more useful to somebody just as yours are. I don't know if I've ever seen anybody shooting the "foreign" cartridge.

That's actually great info! Since I have a Husky T33a Rolling Block, which is a 9.3x57R and hard to find brass for. I'll go look at the specs for my Husky's cartridge, and see if I can trim them down for use in that gun!
And since the 9.3x74R is a donor case for my .40-63 Ballard Everlasting, they might also work for that cartridge too. Looks like the rim is a bit smaller, so will have to check my extractor and make sure it catches the rim OK.

Happy to help. Let us hear what you discover. Never heard of your cartridge. 'Course, there's lots I've never heard of.

I think the old wooden box these cartridges are in is somewhat collectable, as are the cases. Having 2nd thoughts about cutting them down. The box is an old Railway Express Agency box marked as 2000 #120 primers for .30 cal. cartridges. Has a bunch of old  .32-40 and .38-72 cases in it.

Down in the bottom of the box (under the cartridge boxes) I found more brass and ammo. There was one original paper patched .40-63 Ballard marked case. Three more marked the same, but greased cast reloads. Then 15 rounds of empties fire formed to .40-63 Ballard, but marked .30-40 Krag on the heads.

I load and shoot a number of old, long obsolete cartridges.  Here are a couple:

This is a .58 Roberts next to a .22 short for comparison.

And a .32 Extra Long Rimfire using reloadable cases that I made:

That Husky in 9.3x57R, I believe would normally be a 9.3x57R (360) in which case you would start with a 9.3x72R case.

Just getting into Stevens 25-20 Single Shot. Only have limited brass, and want to experiment with various loads to get the most out of it. Rifle is a Stevens 44. I'd like to find the correct tang sight for it since it's missing, as is the elevation ramp for the std. rear sight. Looks like a fun rifle though!

Here in the UK, if you wish to buy a rifle, then you need a space on your Firearms Certificate for one in that caliber. This is a complete pain if you see something on your travels---you can agree to buy it, but you can't take delivery until you have your certificate varied to add the space.
None of the above applied to guns on the Gov. obsolete caliber list, which is extensive. You see the gun, do the deal, take it home---it does not need a licence until you want to have ammo for it and shoot it. You can research loads, buy a mold and dies etc and only then do you need to send your licence in for variation. Hence, I currently shoot: .310 Cadet, 300 Sherwood, .360no5, 8.15 x 46R, .43 Mauser and 577 Snider. Add to this, three muzzle loaders which are also classed as obsolete because they are original, made before the 1939 cut-off date.

Who shoots rifles using obsolete cartridges regularly? new or original.

I shoot what I call a 42 Wesson altho it isn't quite like the original because I couldn't find a parent case that would work.

Most of my single shot rifles shoot obsolete cartridges  Smiley

I'm aware of two .42 Wessons that I have read about in the old Forest& Stream articles. One was a .42 Wesson rimfire and the other is a very rare .42-85 specially build for the long range matches.
I have seen one cartridge at a collectors show and that shell looks close to my .44-75 Ballard everlasting.

I made a deal with a friend of mine, that he would loan me his 71/84 Mauser (.43 Mauser) if I buy all the reloading equipment.  .45-90 WCF brass gets relief turned on rim then I made a fixture to dimple rim to get correct head space.  Shot some of the original cartridges.  They were all extreme hangfires and the brass is very thin.  Couple pieces cracked with only light smokeless loads.  Will be shooting this rifle in CBA Military matches.  This is way more interesting than shooting a .308 or .30-06.

I use Bertram brass in my 71/84 with a Lyman bullet and 75grn of Swiss no4 powder. All my shooting is done off-hand and I find it shoots to point of aim at 100yds: if I then flip up the additional rear sight blade, it is spot on for 200. I never shoot at longer distances and hence have never had to lift up the sight ladder.
