high velocity ammo in Steven's 44 1/2

I have an old Stevens Ideal 44 1/2 in .22 caliber in the 4000 serial range which I think dates it about 1910 or so, gun in excellent shape with most case colors and blue present with excellent barrel, can I shoot modern high velocity 22 ammo with it or should I limit it to old lower velocity? Thanks

Get some Standard Velocity.  It's more accurate anyway.

In fact, in the last year, about the only rimfire seen on gunshop shelves has been CCI Standard.

High velocity ammo will be fine. It is one tough action. I usually use standard velocity in mine most of the time because it is usually more accurate. That being said, mine also seems to like Stingers a lot.

The 44 1/2 was and is used for some high intensity centerfire cartridges with excellent safety.  I shoot .22 Lovell from one, and am almost done with making a Hornet barrel for it.  It'll be loafing with any .22 rimfire cartridge you can name.  I have read of the Stevens .22 rimfire barrels being rechambered for the Hornet and the Lovell in the early days of those numbers, so one can assume that the barrel steel is adequate also.
