32-40-4198-cast bullets loads?

Print Post
     Hi All:

I need some loads for the above combination.  Anybody have good loads?

Yes, I researched these loads but you guys are the real experts!  I found that loads from 14-20 grains of 4198 seem to be popular with cast bullets in the 170 grain range.

The chap from whom I bought the 85 said that he bought a can of 4198 for loading the is rifle as it was suggested that it was the best powder for he 32-40.

                                                  Tia,

that powder should work but only you will find the answer to your question.
If you have the Lyman reloading manual for cast bullet loads, start at the start and develop your loads in increments. There is no shortcut. If you don't have the manual, i will look it up for you tonight.
The type of brass you are using, how the chamber was cut in the neck and throat area, size, diameter, and shape of bullet, type of alloy, bullet seating depth in the case, whether you crimp or not, and how much, and even type of lube and ambient temperature, will all influence accuracy of your loads.
A good fixed ammo load from a good rifle should shoot 1.5" at 100 yards regularly and predictably.
You may burn that pound of powder before you find the best load.
When developing a load for my 32-40s, i go up in 0.5 grain increments and for each half a grain i try different bullets, bullet seating, crimps, primers, etc. That may take a while. I was able to improve already good loads by turning the necks of the brass, annealing, etc. Even that makes a difference. How you size, lube, seat gas checks (if any) on bullets also makes a difference.

    Hi Adrian:

    Thanks for the reply!

I was hoping that I could find an accurate load quickly as in center fire rifle load development.  If cast bulleting shooting is this difficult, I wish that I had started 40 years ago! Lol

     To have a backyard range!!!!

                             Stay well my friend,

Your question could be viewed in two ways, one shooting breach seated bullets and two fixed ammo. Which of the two are you actually seeking advise on? If you are looking to shoot in some Schuetzen Matches in the future fixed ammo simply will not be competitive and the load data for fixed is not the same for breach seating.

Zeke, I have used H4198 in my similar rifle and the results are, at best, mixed. I don't think it would make a good powder for breach seating, but then, I didn't try, either. By the time I got it shooting cleanly and with only a little accuracy plain base bullets were going too fast for my liking. I never want to lead a bore just to use some damn powder. However, using around 16 grains, with a couple of gas-checked bullets, cast in wheel weights, near 180 grains, it shot pretty well. About like was suggested above. I didn't keep this experiment up for very long, though, and I still have the remainder of those bullets and the powder just sitting around taking up room. Maybe some day............. It is pretty dirty at the speeds the .32-40 works best at, so don't think it will change the cleaning situation you had with the 4759, just use a wet patch or two and clean 'er up. Skip that brush and keep the leading as far away as you can. That barrel, like mine, didn't last over a hundred years by getting scratched clean very often.  Good luck. Pat

J Louis, some of us are not competitive, except with ourselves and our own fun, some of us don't care about shooting competitions. An apple or golf ball blasted at 200 yards is just fine.

Zeke is loading fixed ammo. Zeke, there is a big difference between jacketed and lead bullets. You even have to prepare the case neck differently. Try neck sizing only if possible, and expand and flare the necks and case mouths. You can do this by backing your forming die and by acquiring a Lyman M die for .32 caliber.Ideally, you should have 0.002" of case tension on the bullet. A seated bullet expands the case neck/mouth by 0.002", compared to that same case without a seated bullet.  Most dies are cut for jacketed bullets and a lead bullet will be squeezed and deformed when seating. The flare on the case mouth should be enough to insert the bullet's base about 1-1.5 mm by hand.

I think that would be about 1,350 - 1,400 fps.
Zeke, you can try 15 grains of A5744 and a gas checked bullet 0.001"-0.002" over groove diameter.

Lyman lists 16 grains of IMR 4198 at 1397 fps as starting load and 20 grains at 1686 fps as maximum load. The starting load may be accurate, but also dirtier.

Blasting golf balls can be as much fun as hunting or serious competition depending on the individual. The question was pretty generic and one cannot provide sound and more importantly safe advice without first knowing exactly what type of advise one is looking for.

Zeke, in the posts above Adrian has told you about what I was trying to say- He managed it much more concisely than I did. Good job there.
The speed increases quickly with larger charges of H4198, and in my rifle, accuracy went away before I got to max, and I didn't want to be there anyhow. For my money, 4227 and 4759 , if you can get them are better in this cartridge anyhow and have stood the many tests of time. I tried two of the ball powders, but didn't feel comfortable with the notion of the pressure spikes that some guys reported back then. Others have used them with success. They say.
Try seating a bullet into your fired, unsized cases. In my rifle, with the size of bullet it prefers it works very well with the faster two  powders above. Maybe half a thou of tension, but seated right up to the lands it really has helped accuracy, and brass ought to last as long as my breach seated ones do. Best of luck. Cast bullets aint' hard to do, but remembering all the things you have tried out will keep you hoppin' forever. Pat
