25 / 35 DEER Round ?

Recient purchase for Belle, Kettner25/35 Win. SSST, recived with rifle,100 gr Horndey Sp. The 6MM 100 gr Horndey SP is a favort of minefor 40 years, however I'm pushing it 2900 t0 3000 FPS. The 25/35 is not as fast or flat as the 6MM Rem, so do I go for weight 117 gr rather than speed? Range 75yards Deer large 100 lb. field dress. Any one shooting the new composit bullets which are longer with better sectional denisity?

MICKEY:
Most of the new bullets are made to work better at high velocities.   If you could come across some old 117 RN bullets, they would probably be about right for your application, where you want reliable expansion at low velocity.
100# deer are NOT hard to kill, as you know, but you WOULD like to use a bullet which would expand reliably.    At short range, you are not worried about flatness of trajectory.
On the far side of the same coin, I am contemplating shooting a deer with a 12-bore double rifle.   I figure that would let all the air out of one.

Mickey,

I have had very good luck on whitetail and javalina with my 25-35 Martini. Average range has been 100-125 yards. I have been using 100 grain Nosler Ballistic Tips with 20 grains of 4198. I have been using this combination for three years and have not had a critter go more than 15 yards after being hit. The B.T.'s will definitely expand at 25-35 velocities.

I've used my old Marlin 1893 in .25-36M, which is pretty close to the .25-35, and can be successful with the same bullets and powder charge.
I used the heavier round nose 117 gr. jacketed bullet for mine, and pushed it to around 2000 fps. with IMR 3031. It did a great job on our 150-200 lb. mule deer at the distance I took mine, which was slightly over 120 yds.
I could have pushed it faster, but the heavier 117 grain bullet doesn't need to be that fast. I personally thing the lighter bullets don't have enough mass, even for deer sized game.

I personally haven't heard of success with elk and the .25-35? Having taken elk with other calibers, and seeing how tough they are to bring down with much more cartridge; I sure wouldn't try the .25-35 for elk.

Elk with 25-35?
Many years ago, I bought a little Remington pump-gun in 25 REM, and under the buttplate were elk licenses from WYO for 1925-26-27.   So somebody thought it was an elk rifle.

I had a Marlin 1893 in 25-36.  50 yeqrs ago, when I bought that rifle, there were a bunch of woods hunters around Newago Michigan who used 25-35 Winchesters.  Winchester fanatics.  The reputation of these two rifles was great accuracy.  From my experience, they are very accurate.  Mine had the Marlin Reciever sight.  The other guys had Lyman tang sights.  The 117 grain load was a real killer.  Up to two hundred yards.  They ran out of energy much past two hundred yards.[  The point of a 25-35 is it is a rifle for a good shot.  It'll do the job, partly because of the rapid twist.  But you got to hit what you're aiming at.  Several of those oldtimers would go out west for antelope and elk.  But they  hunted elk, they didn't snipe them.  Winkquote author=6B67746A6F6861737F060 link=1430498115/5#5 date=1430838357]Quote:

And I would like to add, hunting elk 50-75 years ago was not the same as hunting them now.  Elk is real skittish now.
