Belgian proof marks under a sharps rifle barrel

Just purchased a early model 1874 Sharps.
Under the handguard there appears Belgian proof marks.
Pic attached.
The gun is ruff, with a milled and surface ground 1858 lock plate. I like it, but I want a full octagon barrel.
IS this some really rare barrel/rifle combo ? It looks exported, then reimported. Anyone ever see a Sharps like this ?

I've seen a number of 1800's rifles with various European proof marks on them. Not sure I've ever seen the marks hidden under the forearm, as it seems more common they were proof marked where the marks were visible. You might consider getting a letter, just in case it shipped to someone famous!
If it was mine, I'd simply set this barrel aside, and keep it. Then it could be returned to the gun if a future owner wanted that. I wouldn't let it stop me from putting what I wanted on the gun. It's not a rare gun, or a pristine specimen, so no harm to make it yours.

It's odd in that the octagonal section if the barrel is so short. Usually the change over from octagon to round takes place at the end of the forearm. Getting a letter from Dr. Lobowski would make interesting reading provided it was shipped from the factory in that condition.

What's stamped on the top of the barrel?

I think I figured it out.
The Barrel is off a FRENCH MLE 1874 GRAS or something similar, shank turned to Sharps thread.
The rest of the gun is Sharps. Only the round cut handguard is SN matching thou.
I'll be looking for a Sharps barrel asap.

That's a perfect outcome to me! I'd feel comfortable doing whatever I wanted if my gun had an off donor barrel.

After looking at 1874 Sharps SRC's in Frank Sellers book, I have decided to stay with a round barrel.
Apparently only 456 Sharps 1874 SRC's were made and the civilian, 2 screw hand guard type have variable length & caliber, from 50-70 to 40-70, and 22 to 26 inch . The 1874 Hunter model barrel is basically the same round barrel, 26-32 inch and also will work.
I am now searching for a correct, round Sharps 1874 barrel.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Have you done a check on your Sharps to see what barrel configuration, and caliber it was shipped with? Might be interesting to know, so you might look towards that configuration. Or if you had to have something built, it would match the original.
