Walker-Hepburn

Finally, here is my version of a Walker-Hepburn action in the raw. It ended up more inspired by a Walker than a duplicate. Just copied everyone else I could find.  8620 steel receiver and breech block.  Most everything else is casehardened mild steel except springs and firing pin.

Started with the ASSRA Hepburn drawings and Tom Rowe’s excellent book, plus suggestions from several on this forum.

Rotated the back half of the action up five degrees to reduce comb height, firing pin angle, and get some cam angle on the breech block.

A toggle linkage like a Fraser action works better for a camming breech block than the Hopkins & Allen link used on the Walker.

With a toggle linkage, a firing pin retractor is not a big issue, ala Winchester, so the rebounding and split tail hammer went away.

Using a stirrup instead of a roller mainspring on the hammer gave room to install a Ballard type DST and sear arrangement.

Extractor is a combination of several designs, but has primary and secondary extraction.

Lever spring is more like a Hopkins & Allen instead of the Walker barrel mount.

Lever is heat, beat, bend, weld, grind, and file. Wish I were a better welder and blacksmith.

Still a lot of work to do but will get there eventually.
Chuck

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

WOW !!! I'm impressed. It amazes me what kind of work some people can do on this forum. Hell, I can't sharpen a lawn mower blade without messing it up. Dale.

It's looking great Chuck, I hope your arms are up to all the filing that has to be done on that lever.  Wink

Wow!! +1  That is some great work. Especially in the short amount of time since you first ask about drawings for same. Were you able to add any camming-action with the lever?

What are you going to charge to make one? Think I would be happy with a simpler Helm-style lever that would not take as much work as you've obviously put into that.

Love the way you timed the screws and a trade mark of a true perfectionist in my book.

I have a lathe and a vertical mill....... and continue to stumble along.

This is way beyond amazing to me.

I may have an edge on you though in the blacksmithing department. Growing up on a 4th generation farm you tend to learn things.  Cool

Great job! Looking forward to seeing the finished rifle.
