My New Mold (Read 8154 times)

	I just got this mold. It's a copy of a Pope 311403. I haven't cast with it so, I don't know if it has the large base band but, it's marked .309 V or X 301 E, with a electric pensil. What I'm most interested in is, who made this fine mold. It's has excellent craftmanship. The mold cavity has a excellent finish and who ever made it, use a shoulder bolt for the pivit and a button head for the stop. The sprue plate could have been thicker as, it's only .110 but, the bullet side is ground. Any ideas? Frank

	The sprue plate is reminiscent of an Andella (?) mold...

	It appears to me that at some point in time the sprue pivot screw and the stop screw have been removed and replaced in the wrong locations. They are usually the same size screws.

They are usually the same size screws. This is a full on, custom mold and not redone Lyman blocks. They are 1.500 x 1.375 x 1.490 long. The width between the mold handle cut, is quite wide @ .870. I have a lot of different mold blocks but, none measure as these do. The pivit is a 1/4" shoulder bolt and the stop screw is a 10x24 button head. I believe that the reason that it is a 10x24 rather than the more used 10x32, is because the 1/4 shoulder bolt uses a 10x24 screw thread, also. The sprue plate is stamped out, that saying, he intended to make a lot of them. Frank

	It appears to me that he uses the button-head screw to keep the spruce plate tight against the mould, good idea. Ledball

	I have to agree with Jeff it looks like an Andela mold. The other possibility is that its a Bud Welch mold. Bud sold all his Cherries and mold equipment to Jim Andela. 40 Rod

	My Andela mold has the same etching for the bullet wt and diameter as the one shown... Jeff

	Jeff, Do you have a picture of your mold? Is Andela still in business and did/does he make schuetzen molds? I bought mine from a guy in Eagle, MI that found it at a second hand store. I like the mold a lot, the only thing I would like better on it is a 3/16 sprue plate. Frank

	I havn't seen Jim Andela in years I don't know if he is still doing machine work or not. He got all his cherries from Bud Welch bud made cherries for many traditional bullets. I still have a 38 schuetzen I got from Jim. 40 Rod

All the ones that I've seen from Bud, were Lymans that he put alignment holes in to cut the cavity. I tried to get a Welch mold off Ebay for my 33 but missed it by one bid Great info, thank you, Jeff and John. Frank
