Ballard .38 Long load data?
Apr 7th, 2015 at 2:20pm
Print Post
My Uncle just bought a nice Ballard in .38 Long and he is having a hard time finding loading data for it. Any load info will be helpful, but he is most interested in type/size of bullet and where he can get a mold.

Thanks.

STEVEN:
Barber's book lists 140-150 gr bullet for the 38L RF, and presumably the CF would be the same.   It will take a heeled bullet, which will be the big problem.  A chamber cast will tell you a lot.   I prefer to use sulfur rather than Cerrosafe, easy to do, cheap, and gives 'good enough" results.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

NEI also has a nice heeled bullet mold for the .38 Long. I use both an original Ideal mold, and a NEI mold for mine. I use a little plinker load of 3.0 grs. of Unique, which is around 650 fps. I run it up a little bit, but this is a good place to start, and maybe work up to 3.5 grs. of Unique.

It depends on your actual bore diameter (not groove ).
If a 38 special hollow based wadcutter doesn't just drop through the barrel but grips slightly on the bore, then this will probably shoot better than the correct heeled bullet.

The heeled bullets I've used have shot surprisingly well given a lead alloy with about 2% tin to fill out the mould, and the right low pressure loads, as long as they fit the bore.
