Ruger No.1 Stock Tight Fit on Ruger No.3 Action (Read 2392 times)

	I posted this on another post about glassing a Ruger No.1 stock and got no replies so I decided to make separate post. Hope to get some opinions about my stock/action fit. It has been edited. I bought a used Ruger No.1 stock to replace the factory stock on my Ruger No.3 rifle. It is a TIGHT fit. The stock slid on ok with a couple of smacks with the palm of my hand up to the last 3/8" or so inch and then tightened up perfectly on the action with me tightening the thru bolt. It was a beautiful fit. I went to take the stock off to send my barreled action to Steve Durren for some of his expert gun smithing. I had to really slap the stock in a downward motion to separate it from the action. Took about 5 minutes. I am beginning to wonder if I need to do a light sanding on the stock where it fits the action or just use some paste wax on the stock. I am concerned with such a tight fit I might be compressing the wood and setting myself up for a cracked stock. Any suggestions? Thanks, George C.

	I would agree that having to hit the stock hard to get it seated, or work hard to remove it, will eventually cause something to give; and it wont be metal. I'd put some felt marker or blackening agent on the metal, and then gently press the wood in until it stops. Then see where it's leaving marks on the wood, and carefully remove a little to make it fit easier. Just repeat until it seats in place without a lot of extra effort.

	I would probably leave it, my CPA is bedded that way and you want a nice snug fit. Get it to loose and the stock will move and throw shots!

	Yes, too loose is bad, but too tight might end up becoming loose if the pressure finally causes the stock to split! It needs to be snug, but not where it has to be drawn down with the through bolt.

When I get the barreled action back, I'm thinking about very lightly sanding the insides of the neck of the stock until I can slide the stock onto the rear of the receiver with just a tap or two with the palm of my hand on the butt, after applying a sealer to the sanded areas.
